I have a 1996 960, and the radio is annoying. It constantly skips or ejects the cd like its unreadable. After shoving it back in a few times itll finaly decide to read it, but 1 minute after it starts playing it starts skipping. I know its not the cd because its multiple cds and when they went in they were perfect. I never even took the cd out, but after 4 days it plays like crap. The first radio i had which was also stock never worked with cds, i know these things have a history of problems. Anyone have any suggestions for a new one? id really like to fill up the double din opening i have, i dont want it to look all weird.

Thanks,
Aaron

I was looking at that, but i dont think thats really the problem since it does play once in a while. plus, id really like to get a new one since ive gone through two of the same radios in the past 3 months and theyve both gone sour. Thanks for your reply.

Well first you have to ask yourself a few questions. I took the time to assemble some very basic questions for buying a head unit.
  • 1.How much do I want to spend?
  • 2.How far do you want to take this. Do you want to A. Go all out and buy an insane system. B. Do you want to just repalce all the interior speakers eventually? C. Do you just want a new cd player.
  • 3.Do I want to be able to play mp3 and/or wma files?
After this you should be able to narrow your choices a bit.

I would be willing to go up to 300 dollars, and eventualy i will probably replace the interior speakers, but im not all that sure. I dont want an insane system, i just dont have the funds for that. Mp3 playback would be nice, but its not necessary.

300 dollars is more than enough... since your not all about upgrading speakers just go pickup a nice kenwood or alpine for around 200 to 250... they should have mp3 playback, buy it at circuit city and they do a free install.. if your not wanting to install yourself.

you buy a plastic pocket...

^pictured below the hu, circuit city can provide you with this... it is made for multiple makes of car... I would recomend epoxying the faceplate to the pocket itself so it stays on there.

Yeah, your stock speakers will sound far better than they did because the new deck puts out way more RMS power than stock. The lower din opening will be a cubby hole. Just make sure you get the guy to install it in there when you buy the new deck. I have the Kenwood Excelon KDCX679, it's pretty darn awesome, and I got a storage hole right below it. I'll post pics if photodum ever gets their server up... PM if you want pics sooner.
