wow, i was really hoping this community would step back and look at these posters artistically. i put a good 20 hours into mine because i was expecting the same from the other contestants. these were suppose to be displayed in malls or at least that was the idea behind making them. And in the spirit of making professional posters i also thought that implied copyright laws. contrary to popular belief pulling pictures off google and using them is considered copyright infringement. im not even gonna spend my time tearing apart whats wrong with # 8 because im just too angry. i guess i should have expected this from a community who up load pictures with boarders and call them artistic and tell everyone to lower and put pegs on their car and tell people who try different things that their cars are ugly and they should change it (black eyebrows on silver car ring a bell?) well congrats to number 8 for earning 150 dollars from 15 minutes worth of work. GG graphic design. i guess people really are suckers for B&W with a color scheme on top. /end rant

p.s. i apologize for any feeling hurt or people offended im just tried of being undercut by photochopped pictures and work. good day and good luck for the rest of the competition

I'm granting your wish: I'm looking at your poster "artistically" [whatever that means].

First off... I'm sorry to hear that waste 20 hours. Looks like you need to point your finger right back at yourself. Unless you photographed the car you used then it seems to me you acquired through ... hmmm... google? [side note... most of the photos used in other posters shown appear to be personal photos — not googled images as you used].

By this time tomorrow I could have my 4 year old daughter using live trace in Illustrator... whoop doo... you can create vector art. Way to go. It matters not how difficult it is to create artwork — what matters is how well it is done. I'm afraid everyone is selecting No. 8 because its design is far superior. Good design [same as art] does not rest in the method but in the result.

Let me drop some reasoning on you. Your color palette is all over the place. Even giving you the benefit of the doubt because I'm viewing your work on screen, your color selection and use of light is causing your poster to be less effective. Your choice of typography is not spectacular and could stand to have some additional thought behind it. How you placed the type does not lead my eye through the poster as it should. The entire layout is imbalanced is simply is not pleasing to the eye.

You say you took the time to focus on the final production ... I say neigh. The bkgrnd of your poster would print like mud... not to mention the ghosted image serves no real purpose in the design.

Your headline is tired and not very accurate and you should have an appostrophy in "Volvo's"... oh and you probably won't get way with using "Volvo's" anyway... so some rewriting is in order. And you thought you were copyright safe.

From a branding standpoint... you failed to use the volovspeed logo. Why?

If you put as much time putting THOUGHT into the poster as you did tracing the dumb car you may end up with a better result.

So stop whining about why number 8 was picked... It was picked because it was simply better.

It's not over yet. But it sounds to me like you're well on your way to a life of artistic martyrdom. Don't take everything so personally. :) Oh, and I always thought you attended a school to learn something not previously known to you. Are you done there yet? Maybe you have a few more things to learn... I've got tons of things left to learn, and I've been doing art for 30 years.

So you're saying that if I found a photo online, say of the famous BTCC car, then loaded it up in Illustrator and ran Live Trace on it...

calling it my own work might be construed as copyright infringement?

No now you are confusing IP patent infringement with copyright/trademark infringement. If like if draw a picture of Marisa Miller thats cool. If you xerox the cover of SI and write your name on it it is not. This really is not that hard to grasp.

First off...

Could you give me some feedback on mine? I thought I did a pretty good job as far as having a clear focal point and aiming it at a specific target audience. I like number 8 as well it just really bugs me how it was executed as far as the cutting of the car is concerned. Whereas mine (and a couple others) would be pretty easy to actually blow up and print and still look decent IMO. I was going for something simple and clean, yet something that makes you wonder what the hell is happening over on Volvospeed, lol. No inside jokes, no specifics, just something to hopefully inspire someone to come check out the site.

I feel that 1 had pretty good composition but excessive text to be effective and might have worked more with less of a blur effect.

I wasnt going to even post again in this thread but it is nice to actually hear a pretty good critique.

That's my point. That wasn't my poster, but that guy went on a rant about copyright issues when he obviously used that image and the pen tool.

it's amazing that whenever chuck says it no one questions it or calls him an idiot. thx chuck.

and those of you who are accusing me of using live trace, clearly have never used the live trace, because it doesnt give u this

vector850race03.jpg

as soon as i finish installing all my stuff on my new computer ill save a hi-res version of the vector image. each defining line is stylized and different from the other. so how dare u accuse me of using live trace. gtfo

iv already put this topic to bed so let it die. if its so immature in this topic then stop posting.

But in all fairness we know what job titles are worth. Kid Rocks an "artist" how do you feel about him?

Search OT and you'll find out. Even though that's just my personal opinion, by definition, he IS an artist.

i dont really care what he does. he said i used live trace and i didn't... so i dont know how good he could be at his job when he thinks i used live trace and got the result i got. i penned every line by hand.
