And that "basket filter" inside the flame trap housing, throw that away. Volvo stopped putting in the actual flame trap (basket) for the later year cars, all it does it get clogged.

Yes, a bad ECT can cause misfires or stumbling. The ECU uses the coolant temp to adjust the air:fuel ratios (AFRs) on the intake side of the engine. If a bad signal is coming in from the ECT, then the AFRs are set for a different temperature than is actually present in the engine. This will result in misfires or stumbling, much like when the MAF is bad.
