Dont bother with used ETMs unless they are yellow label, have a newish date code and have known VERY low miles.

My bet is the ETM

It was yellow label. I'm not sure about the mileage but I'll bring it up.

Also, spoke to a friend that's a bit more car-savvy than I am and he suggested the MAF. Thoughts?

First I would get a compression and leak down test. Then make 100% sure the plugs that were replaced are Volvo only! That will rule out those to areas.

Also have you had the timing belt done recently? As they could have screwed up te VVT.

As for the ETM, that's brand new? Rebuilt? Or a used POS?

The plugs made no change in the running condition of the car, they were done along with the ETM and the three coil packs. The timing belt was done about a year and a half ago by our trusted independent mechanic.

The ETM is used, whether it's a POS or not is honestly beyond me. This was all my father's legwork and the mechanic was said to have tested the ETM.

What happened that it needed an new ECU

Again, one of those things my dad consented to. Been using the same mechanic for years, through a few different cars and he's always been trustworthy and reliable. This might be a miscommunication or misunderstanding, ECUs don't really die.

Agreed.

OP: Any codes currently stored?

There was a code for the ETM but there's nothing now.

Thanks everyone.
