Its a splashguard to keep water, dirt, dust, oils, grease ect off of your rotors..it sits directly behind the rotor and its made of metal...if it's bent at all it will rub against your rotor as there is very little clearance...Do you even know if your pads have wear indicators? I've never seen any volvo brake pads with wear indicators..

I just assume they have wear indicators, I'm just going to change the rotors and pads and go from there, thanks for your insight.

I've never heard a wheel bearing squeal..Sounds more like a brake issue or belt/ pulley issue..Bearings make a humming noise similar to a tire noise...
Check your backing plate...it may be coming into contact with the rotor...especially if someone removed the wheel and let it hit the backing plate when the bolts were removed..

Hmm, not sure what the backing plate is but if what you say is true, would replacing the front rotor and pads do it? I really need to relace them, according to my records the front rotor and pads were changed 80,000 miles ago. I was waiting to hear the wear indicators sound before changing them, there is some high pitch squeal only when applying the brakes in reverse. Thanks all, so far, for all the suggestions.

Sure it's not a belt squealing?
Good point, not positive, should I pull over and lift the hood next time?

what kind of squealing? is it a chirping? ( brake pad wear indicators) is it a variable squealing that changes with RPMs? Just when driving forward? or does it do it when its sitting still?
more specific please.
I hear only when I'm moving. Sometimes a constant high pitch squeal and at times it occurs itermittenly like at the same point of a revolution. The front brake probably needs new pads but doesn't make the noise only when depressing the brakes.
