Don't leave it off. I made that mistake and cracked the bottom of the intercooler on a curb. Managed to repair it with epoxy and fiberglass, mostly because I was too lazy to remove electric fan, shroud, radiator, etc - but also because replacement intercooler is $400 (part only)!
