good call, im going to order new box and hoses from fcp.
but...where is "over the intake runners" located? would the hose you're suggesting being routed - is this the hose going to the head/to the flame trap area, or both?

awesome replies, thanks all. i think ill go buy that scrapyard box and clean it first, then have it ready. the copper idea sounds great as well since this area isnt easy to get to.
mine in fact does NOT have the vacuum. which is prob why it failed. other 95-97 NA owner's out there: beware, yours is probably shot too! your engine is prob intaking pure exhaust air for its air supply! no wonder my airbox was so dusty and my mileage in -town with light foot was 18-19 mpg rather than 22.
im taking the advice to leave this thing out of the circuit. i live in CO so i dont need it anyway (for cold starts); what i do need is constant supply fresh, dense cold air to increase fuel efficiency while gas is close to 4$/gal rather than a cheesy valve to fail closed, giving me hot, dirty exhaust air.
i was in the junk yard today and saw a 94 with only a 1-way tube to pipe in fresh air (only) to the air box. i took this one to use.
before i found this 94 part, i had packed about 4 thick washers into my other tube's actuator piston to hold the piston in a position to intake only the fresh air.th
