#2229162 Leaking Line Under Upper Rad Hose

Posted by jdlc on 26 April 2013 - 02:57 PM

Bad idea.  You will be without a running car if you mess up.  You need to get it off the car to
do it properly.
You can of course prove me wrong.  So I wish you good luck.  (Hose ID is 1/2 btw, get appropriate one that will resist oil and can withstand heat and pressure - heater hose is NO good).  GL

Clean and grease the steering stops on both sides - it's on the front of the lower control arm and the other surface is on the hub-housing.

#2169923 Switching T-Belt Tensioner

Posted by jdlc on 24 October 2012 - 03:40 AM

I remember reading that some people were switching from the old 850 hydraulic tensioner to the newer style one on the x70s. If I wanted to do that, what do I all need to replace? Just the tensioner? Or that and the other roller?

I can't stand that stupid ass hydraulic one.

You only need two things:   a new belt (274338) and the new tensioner (30638277) - the idler pulley are the same for both set-up (your old automatic with hydraulic tensioner and this mechanical/manual set-up).  Of course, you could choose to get a new idler pulley if you wish - 9146376.

The new mechanical/manual tensioner bolts to the same spot as the old-style tensioner-roller.  It is the hydraulic tensioner that requires two holes on the block which, in newer engines are not present anymore.  Therefore, any 5 cyl engine can use the new set-up without any drilling (even our 06S60 has the new set-up and uses the same parts I listed!).

I stand corrected - the new mechanical/manual tensioner bolts to DIFFERENT spot as the old-style tensioner-roller.

Btw, per Volvo user manual:
Old set-up = 70k service interval
New set-up = 105k service interval; 120k on our S60! (I wonder what changed - I'll probably do our S60 comes 100k with all new parts just to be safe)

#2166562 98 S70 Glt To 98 V70 Na Motor & At Swap

Posted by jdlc on 15 October 2012 - 11:57 PM

It's alive!  Fired right up first try  : ).

Took me 3 weekends, plus number of after-hours and some mornings - solo for the most part.

So, to be clear, this is 98 to 98, and these are the differences:
- the engine harnesses are different, and of course, that of the Turbo was used, disconnected under the ecu box
- Turbo needs baro sensor connector near the windshield washer tank area (purple connector) - my 98 NA is pre-wired for it (you need this Baro sensor)
- Turbo needs TCV electrical connector, again, my 98 NA is pre-wired for it
- Turbo has electrical connector for the PCT, and it's non-issue since the Turbo engine harness came with it
- Turbo has ambient temp sensor (blue connector under the front bumper, passenger side), the Turbo engine harness came with it  (you need this ambient temp sensor)
- Turbo has extra vacuum line behind the engine connected to the fuel regulator 'system' (the other end connects to one of the nipples of the air intake)
- exhaust systems (cat and catback)
- turbo has (stock) intercooler sandwiched between rad and  AC condenser

Fuel lines:  the differences are easy to reconcile in my case, but I'm not sure if this applies to other year models (850s), it's just the location of the regulator, so I simply run a hard plastic vacuum hose towards the back near the fuel filter where the regulator is of the NA.  That is, I utilized the regulator of the NA.  I didn't need to cut the fuel line and instead decoupled them in the compression coupling.
This was after I studied them carefully.  In the end,  the vacuum line originally connected to the NA fuel regulator near the fuel filter had to be plugged up (it branched off the large hard-line EVAP hose) as vacuum for it will now have to come from where the Turbo regulator was once getting it from - they are about 4 feet from each other so I needed to use a vacuum hose of same length to connect them .
I'll try to take a picture and post it here when I get a chance.

Last words:
The turbo engine must come with everything - Turbo, IC piping, TCV, Baro sensor, ambient temp sensor, air-box, air-intake, etc.
Ideally, the donor car should be accessible, so turbo engine set-up can be observed.  It will be a lot more challenging otherwise.

Thanks for those who tried it first.   And no, I'm not doing it ever again, lol.

So, booyah!

#2152903 98 S70 Glt To 98 V70 Na Motor & At Swap

Posted by jdlc on 31 August 2012 - 12:26 PM

Shortly after hitting 200k miles, our V70 NA started to make whining noise in the front engine area.  Noticed the top was not getting oil, a clear sign of sump pump issue.
Just the same, I removed the serp belt to rule out other possible cause, and the noise was still there.  Also checked t-belt area and both rollers and the water-pump checked-out fine.

There was no oil pressure light, which was surprising as the top was barely getting any oil.

I've done sump pump seal replacement before and it's not fun.
So instead, I'm thinking of swapping the engine from the GLT because:
- GLT has fewer miles and has tan interior
- already done the RMS, as well as PCV, and t-belt in the last 10k of the GLT
- LPT as it is, GLT's still turbo and pulls stronger than NA
- I need to get rid of one car anyway as we're actively looking for a car for my wife
- wagon is very useful in hauling stuff, and V70 is generally in better shape than the GLT (black leather interior, with R-panel, alum door sill, rear cup holder & map pocket)
- Got it new and kids grew up with the V70, it has loads of sentimental value - latest mission was trip to NYC to send off first college child in America!
- it sounds like a cool project to do : )

I checked the NA and found two wire connectors meant for turbo cars that have blank connectors - one for the baro sensor near windshield washer tank, and the other meant for TCV but I can't seem to find any  connector for the PCT nipple.  So I plan to do a simple experiment on the GLT to find out if that would matter by disconnecting it and see if CEL would come on, but I doubt it will.  Hopefully, I can use the NA wire harness.

Am I missing any other turbo connection to check on my NA if it's present?

I also notice the different fuel line set-up - so swap will include fuel line system to some degree.

I'm beginning to browse the na to turbo thread in here and it seems to lack detail.

I hope I can document the swap and do my own write-up but no promises as it's hard to do that working solo : )

Any feedback/tips is welcome.

Playing Thriller LP right now.
Born in the USA and Brother in Arms earlier - have 15 of these kind of landmark LPs for $1 each in tag-sales : ) .

I did order Joy D's Unknown Pleasure online and holy moly, it's just different than CD.  Love to play this alone with just candle light.
Beatles Abbey Rd is awesome as well.

#1699771 Volvo Finally Sold ?

Posted by jdlc on 23 December 2009 - 05:32 PM

Obviously negotiation been on the table for sometime now, but with Saab going, I think this is not a wise move now - all being equal, people actually look for alternative and being (the only) Swedish is a hell of a way to differentiate your car brand imo.

That Ford have in fact bastardize the brand already since owning it is of course debatable.
