Where did you put your ground during the jumping method?
edit: since I'm about to go to sleep I'll post my total rational based on the answer you give. If you put the ground in the proper place(away from a discharged battery) you provided an adeqate ground for the starter and electronics. From there the alternator took over. So, if this is the case, I would inspect your battery grounds.
If it isn't the case... Well I think more diagnostics are in order.
