  1. The EGT's are very low with such rich AFR's. To get EGT's over 1400ºF (immediately post-turbo), I need AFR's in the high 12's, low 13's.

I still have to compensate more for the lower boost. Right now the AFR's are up to 11.25ish, so still got some way to go to get it back into the low 12's.

My EGT begins to climb when I go above the 12.4 AFR mark too but unless I have timing way low or am running too lean AND high load, they don't get crazy high. I'm measuring pre-turbo so I guess there is maybe +150-200F difference? What kind of peaks do you see?

Your car is so amazing! I love "tuning in" to your threads to see what you are working on...Those new headers are sweet looking, I hope they net you something substantial beyond the obvious cool factor.

  2. Idle shouldn't be lopey - mine was fine until I moved the cams. You can always PM me screen shots of your maps if you need assistance.

You should have standardized the load & rpm maps so that they all equate - did you alter the scaling?

Seem to be making some progress on evening out the timing, albeit at 18psi (data log underreports) - but now the boost flutters when at it's peak - I swapped out the Greddy spring for the stiffer version today - clearly still needs adjustment. Seems to show up under the MAF scale, the boost appears level in the log, but it was pulsing!

reduced timing in the 56-62% range, that seems to be the ticket as far as the timing dip I had @ 5400rpm

When I say lopey I'm not talking 60/70's era muscle car lopey, I mean that you can hear a slight change in the pitch of the exhaust tone and it sort of sing-songs up and down...the RPM is steady to where it is undetectable if it is changing on the dash gauge...It was not sing-song like that with the Volvo T5 stock tune...or maybe I couldn't hear it with the stock exhaust, that seems like so long ago...

I started with the base performance maps and until recently didn't realize they were different...not sure why they would not have them standardized to begin with. Adjustable sure but they should have started the same...I sense some more laptop time in my near future...

I'll get things sorted out as much as I can first and once I get a way to log my timing along with the other, I'll share for input...I can't log that at the moment...and once you pass a certain point, you have to play with timing and I, like you need to see and record exactly what it is doing. The butt only takes you so far in tuning and I'm past that...

  3. You got me on the overlap vs vacuum...I think it is harder to figure than it first appears due to exhaust back pressure and back filling cylinders etc...gives me a headache when I think about it

My idle has been lopey since I got TT, same with running rich at WOT. I think I can fix the running rich in the fuel maps but not sure about the lopey idle...could it be that the ECU can't decide which block it wants to be in making it bounce around since each of the three maps are layed out on a different grid of load x RPM ?

  4. Got the manifold back on today

now I need to alter the cam timing & the tune, to adjust for the loss of low end.

EDIT: (ref link)Moved the cam timing from :

EXH 2º ADV INT 2º Retard

    to:

    EXH 4º ADV INT 0º

    See how that goes.

Did you ever figure out what stock setting for turbos are?

I recently (Friday) moved from EX +4(IPD) IN +3(IPD

to EX +2.5(IPD) IN +2.5 (IPD)

It helped smooth the power band out with the most recent revision to my TT maps. Peeking at those you posted here last week helped a lot with the ignition maps...Thanks!

I do miss the raw power down low that the more advanced settings had...maybe when I get the insides beefed up I can go back...for now, my tires will last longer ;)

  5. I feel your pain H, I am going through the same type problems trying to tune mine but at a MUCH slower pace...If I had one TT wish it would be map-trace log...It would be interesting to see your maps although I am only at ~18+psi peak on an 18T. And my goal is not necessarily high peak power but more usable low and mid-range power since this car is first and foremost a street car that's daily driven.

  6. TT and k24 , could be hard to come across.

I can tell you that you can run 18-19psi on stock block.

Just make sure that you will not exceed 10psi before 3500 rpms.

    Work with fuel map .

Timing has a pretty good map that comes preloaded with tt.

I'm running 18 psi on my 18T with stock internals (for now). Im running a Hallman Pro MBC in parallel to an IPD HD-TCV to help keep me out of trouble.

I've been tweaking the fuel map but am not satisfied with it yet. I'm afraid to just romp on her but I rarely see >12 psi under 3600 rpm. I probably would if I just floored it but I want to keep her in great running order so I ease into high boost. Using base performance ignition timing map and it seems quite good so far.

I'm interested to hear more about your (and everyone elses) TT adventures.

  7. All this talk about socialism, and yet the government hasn't done anything socialist. Plllllease look up the definition of socialism and then site specifically what the administration has done that is socialist. I shall prepare my rebuttal.

Consider that there are a number of different definitions for socialist forms of government (traditional) and the definition is a moving target. I never said Obama or his administration are socialist, but it is undeniable that this administration's policies, and other historical administrations policies both Democrat and Republican) are pushing the country towards socialism. Any time they begin to infringe upon citizens rights or get involved in capitalistic ventures, they nibble away at what makes America great and moves us toward a more socialistic type government. Modern Socialism.

    Trends toward Modern Socialism include:

Infringing on the constitutional rights of citizens

    Interfering in capital markets

widening gap on "acceptable" property takings / eminent domain

interfering in individual businesses and industries

and anything done with a Robin Hood mentality of take from the haves and give to the have nots in the interest of "fairness and equality"

  8. This is a complete regurgitation of fake news talking points. There is nothing remotely socialist about the United States based on any traditional definition of that word. Anyone who believes Obama is a 'socialist' is a fool.

Then why is so much of our tax money spent on social programs for people who pay little or no taxes and why does it keep getting bigger and bigger. Nothing in the constitution suggests that it is the duty of the government to support its citizens financially. How is it justified for them to take anyone's hard earned money and give it to someone else, regardless of their condition. Charity begins at home and should be handled through a persons chosen conduit...NOT the government. Additionally, if they continue to spend more and more, increasing taxes to help cover the spending, eventually companies will have to trim the fat closer and closer. Less people working and more taxes needed to float the bloated government means eventually you run out of tax payers and have nothing left but a dependent (on government) socialist mess...

The only thing wrong with the stimulus plan is that it wasn't big enough, and too much of the money it did spend was given to the major financial institutions who caused this economic crisis. Why shouldn't they go under if they fail? Indeed, they should be allowed to fail and should not have been given the money in the first place. We do not have enough information to know if the amount of money was enough or not, perhaps just allocated incorrectly...

There are times and conditions when the government should step in to influence the economy, but ordinarily the forces of capitalism should be left to their own course, success or failure, based on the merit of the chosen business model and implementation of such. Conversely, successful entities and individuals should not be punished by excessive tax burden just by virtue of their success. Do remember that ultimately the CONSUMER pays the tax, not the company. Again increasing the dependency cycle.

If nothing is done to boost this economy via increased government spending, then our current economic troubles are only going to get worse.

But if the government continues to spend money it does not have, we will be caught in a cycle of skyrocketing debt that will be impossible to recover from. This insanity has to stop now. Our debt is owned largely by China...if they decide to call that in then what...

Sometimes change hurts but that is exactly what we need now...change, change to more fiscal responsibility at all levels of government AND INDUSTRY, and change to people's level of personal responsibility. Everyone and every entity (government or otherwise) should be required to operate within its budget and not be allowed to borrow more than can reasonably be repaid...We don't even need government to police this...see my comment on bank failures and capitalism. It works if you let it!

I think their biggest problem is the transparent bigotry and hatred for "others" that kills any broad-based support for necessary change.

The only bigotry and hatred is for people too lazy to help themselves to anything but the Government pie handouts! This is not about race, or sex, or national origin, or religion, or handicap, it is about responsibility to ourselves and each other.

  9. The Tea Party is not make believe. But it is also not a "political party". It is a grass roots association of like-minded individuals with no leader, who believe that government is too big, socialism is wrong, and the law of the land should be based solely on the amended constitution of the United States. With core values of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets, Tea Party Patriots are conservative in nature but not closely aligned with the Republican Party. Needless to say they are not liberals or Democrats in any way.

How can anyone support either republicans or democrats? These fools are converting our country to socialism and bankrupting her at the same time???

If you personally spend more than you make what happens???

Should our government be allowed to continue this trend to the ruine of our country???

    Think about it...

Maybe you should be a Patriot

  10. It's all pretty easy, compressing the tensioner might be the most awkward thing to do. It's hydraulic, so you need something that can push on both ends of it with a lot of sustained force. The methods I've used in the past: 1) Valve spring compressor, 2) Big bench vise (probably best), and 3) Floor jack pushing up onto the bottom of the car  (most readily available and basically what I do these days when not at the shop

The water pump shouldn't be difficult, just a handful of 10mm bolts. The tensioner pulley is easy, I think it's two bolts although I don't really remember.

The most PITA thing I think is going to be physically getting the old belt off around the crank pulley. Always seems to be something you wrangle with for whatever reason. When I do the NA cams, I'll try to at least do a writeup on everything I do.

+1, very easy, correct on the WP and pulley...take your time and follow a good write up (volvospeed maint. section).

I have used a vice and agree its easiest and also a large C-clamp to compress the hydraulic tensioner.

  11. Is this similar to the cam locking tool that your are talking about Hussein?

If you make one be sure that your tabs are parallel to each other and offset. iirs the exhaust one is slot up and the intake is slot down. It is in Haynes, check to be sure.

    FAIL ON PIC V :monkey:
