Last months we’ve been very busy at Johann’s workshop, aka Area 34.

Cleaning, sorting, checking the cars, etc.

    Status update on Johann’s heritage:

    - SDM (the OG N/A racecar ☝🏼); runs and drives. Needs a belt (16 years old, but still looks brand new😅). Needs a seat swap, lots of tiny details and a good cleanup. Had a backfire at first start so it became a 2 cylinder while the Jenveys switched in a save mode. Took us a few headaches to find out. It’s loud, it’s fast, it’s nuts.

    - SD11; 855 with 4T4, M66, VST; sold

    - 850 Carrier (6 wheeler); failed inspections two years ago. Couple of days work and then it should be good to go. Needs calipers, front axle…Runs and drive. Finding a good place for inspections is hard, it’s a odd size vehicle.

Datsun 180b; first run in 12ish years yesterday. Fitted with a new battery and found out that the ignition didn’t work, as we later found out Johann stated that fault in a old topic in 2012. Needs inspection and a new rms.

Square tires, limited interior. When the 18t starts to spool at 3000tpm, the earth stops rotating. Crazy little car.

D2 (n/a 10v in Porsche green); might become a parts car of the carrier.

850 ERC (CY rallycar) ME7 N/A, to be determined.

Opel Blitz with the T5 will be sold without the engine.

Really nice to work with Johanns sons and his dear long time friend Zippo (Maarten) on his old projects.

    ❤️

Brings me joy to hear SDM is still around, thank you for the update.

I originally bought the 1.25amp you linked, but 1.25amp would have taken longer than I would have liked since I needed it recharged quicker to be able to move the car again.

Now that we're all moved out, closing is on the 14th, so it will sit in a comfy garage 360 days of the year im sure.

The Noco charged it back up within a few hours fully.
I can report back in a few months once the car has been sitting again for awhile, its currently parked at a friends shop while we await closing.

Good to know it's effective, I plugged it in, put the cover on and haven't really looked at this car since. Good luck on your move!

Bought a battery tender for the s70.
In the process of moving/packing up the garage so the constant pulling it out and in finally drained the battery enough over the weekend that it almost didnt start.

What tender do you guys use?

Own this and the older version of this:

    Battery Tender Plus

Curious how the Noco works out, first year I'm using it - the BT has kept numerous batteries afloat and brought some back from the dead until I could source new ones, great unit.

Is Off Topic: The Thread dead?

Man I used to come here every night and read y'all's funny AF comments.

Mostly the whole forum...getting more and more rare to see older 850/V70/S70 cars on the road - most of us who owned one in their prime have gone in to different things

Love the DWS 06 on the BMW. We had two small (1-2") snow days here but it was the wet slippery stuff and the tires were great. Nothing compared to a dedicated snow. They are also pretty quiet and grip well in the dry/wet. I'm not so sure how much of that will translate over to an SUV though.

DicountTireDirect may have a good sale for the 4th. I think I got ~$200 in rebates when I ordered mine between the sale, Conti rebate, and DTD credit card rebate.

Dws are the stuff. I was parallel parking over mounds of snow in Philly in my s70 while a Prius was sliding backwards down the street. I don't think I can break the tires loose in the rain either. Not that that's saying much with the s70.

I had a coworker put them on an X5 (20" if I recall correctly) and said nothing but good things about them as well - if I ever have to buy a set of all seasons (somehow the cars I keep buying have good all seasons but no snow tires) those will be the ones

Sweet. Yeah, I love the higher-end Nikons for that reason. It's so handy.

Ahh okay. Hmmm, I wonder if the 10-20 Sigma would work the same way as my 10-24 on an FF.

Not sure, but I need that lens open at 10mm on a regular basis - probably going to stick with DX for a while as can still mess around with full frame on my 35mm film cameras

  7. 1 hour ago, RBoy8 said:

What lenses do you have? I've found the 10-24 actually works as long as you keep it between 15-24. There's still some slight vignetting at 15 but you can always fix that with editing.

The transition from the D7xxx to 750 was actually very easy. It's very slightly larger in size but the button placement is very similar. I actually found moving from my D5200 to 7100 was a bit tougher because the 5200 was a bit more "basic". If you go from your 7000 to 750, I think you'll get used to it super quickly.

    I have...

    18-70 Nikkor DX, 10-20 Sigma DX, 35 1.8 DX, 60 2.8 FX

I tried to resist when Henry's had the D750 on sale for boxing day but couldn't lol. Literally drove through the aftermath ice storm the morning of the 26th, which was great because the store was totally empty and I got one of the two they had in stock.

The D750 is my 'goal' camera but I only have 1 full frame lens and the D7000 is doing the job (literally) for me quite well.

Owning both, how does the D7000/D71000/D72000 compare with the FF D750?

  9. Clipless is a complete misnomer, agree.

Surprised the majority of the MTB guys in here do platforms - last time I ran them I came over a rock feature, my foot slipped off the pedal, and the pedal gouged my leg bigtime. Nothing against them, but I quickly learned to clip in/clip out, those took a while to heal :blockhead:

NAD 3225pe or 3020 integrated. (3225 can be had for $100.. Great integrated)

Or an old silver face pioneer 6550 or 7550 or Kenwood ka series integrated from the 70s... Warm, powerful and bullet proof

Looking to replace a big, 1970s era Pioneer to get updated terminals, smaller footprint, etc - keeping my eye out for the NAD models thanks!

  12. Reviving this thread...

Building a low-budget system for a friend with my old B&W DM100i and Kimber 8PR. Source will be 90% digital from a PC and Fiio DAC box, using Kimber PBJ from Fiio - amp...

    What's a good option for a no-fuss, nearfield amp/integrated with a little warmth?

System will sit on a big computer desk in a small room and will be played at mostly conversational volume

  13. I was actually thinking about this the other day, coming up on 10 years of membership soon

When I was in high school, I wanted an 850 Turbo

When I had the money for one last year, no clean ones were to be found so I bought the V50 instead - a lot of the P80s were bought as throwaway cars by people like me 5 years ago (case in point, I trashed my 1 owner, low mileage manual 97 NA)

As a performance platform the new cars just aren't affordable enough yet and the older ones have people like me in the mid-to-late twenties saying 'Monkey that, I need an Amazon subscription of PB Blaster for this car - if I'm going through all this hassle it will be for something worth it

I would also wager that enough of us have tried to turn these luxo barges into performance cars and run into the plethora of problems that come when you try to force a car to be something it was never designed to be - anyone who wants a fun car won't buy a Volvo and we've all tried it and still hang here to scare people away.

I'm split between Volvo and VW - the aftermarket (mods & parts), supply of decent preowned ones, and wrenching ease is up for the MK4 (1999-2004) VWs as these are just reaching the bottom of the depreciation curve much like the 850s and S70s were 5ish years ago...

Also, the dealer only subscription software and lack of manual transmissions has all but forced me to buy a VW

I mean depending on the condition, mine needed a new axle, suspension all around, and the interior was a bit haggard, body panels were straight though

Yeah mine needs a new rad and an O2 sensor, interior is okay, exterior is a bit beat up...might need a bearing as well

Great car to manual swap though, and still runs great aside from the above
