  1. clear plastic hose from Home Depot hooked up to tranny fluid line that enters top of radiator. I clamped it just to be safe (1/2 inch diameter from inside to inside. Just start car and let 2 qts. run out then shut off and refill. Keep doing this until good clean red tranny fluid is coming out consistently. I also bought a new tranny hose clamp from the dealer as it is hard to get old one off without damaging it. Really easy if you have someone else who can start and stop the car while you watch the amount coming out. Make sure whatever you use to flush old fluid in is marked in 2 qt. increments. I used a 5 gal. bucket and just marked it myself up to 12 qts. I actually use 10 qts. some have said they used as much as 15 qts.
  2. I'm a moron, I bought hose that is 1/2 inch from outside edge to outside edge and 3/8 inch from inside edge to inside edge. I went to home depot and got the right one and the flush went perfect, only needed 10 qts. It was actually good clean red after about 7 qts. but I wanted to be sure and went ahead to 10 qts.
  3. About to do my tranny fluid flush and the 1/2 diameter hose I got seems impossible to get over the tranny line fitting. Is it possible I need a slightly largeer size hose? 98 V70 N/A
  4. Thanks Russ! and you are so right about time. Our almost 3 yr. old little girl is just growing too fast!
  5. Just went and installed new seal and new passenger's side raxle axle. I haven't test driven yet as I have to finish brakes and rotors but that axle went in perfect! Of course the axle nut is not 36mm on the new axle so I have to go get the correct size socket. Thats o.k. minor irritation considering how well the axle went in. It looks to be a 30 or 32mm socket but I'm not sure. When I pulled old seal out lost some ATF but as soon as you put new one in it stops. AS far as the seal goes I would suggest to buy from the dealer as it fits perfect and is indentical. Oh yeah, what diameter hose do I need to bleed the brake fluid? Thanks
  6. O.K. slow down, I have the new seal from Volvo. But when I pulled the old axle out absolutely no fluid came out at all. by the way, the old axle came out super easy, just slid right out. I still should replace shouldn't I? As far as I know it is the same seal that came with it brand new in 98.
  7. since I have the axle out I'm gonna replace it, might as well.
  8. O.K. either God is smiling on me or something is wrong. I took the two bearing support bolts out and the bracket off. Then I just ever so slightly wiggled the axle and it just came right out. That is good? right! No fluid is coming out either, so should I not replace the seal? Of course something has to go kind of wrong. I just checked the seal I got from O'reilly, doesn't fit! wrong one. That is what I get for trying to save a few bucks and miles. Now I am off to Darrell Waltrip Volvo to get the right seal.
  9. The puller worked great, I just turned the arms around and it pushed the axle right out. Man, it sure is rusty&dirty in the wheel bearing where the axle spline goes. What is a good way to clean that out? Now I am off to try and get the axle out of the tranny. This is the part I'm kind of freaked out on. Once I get the support bearing loose can I just jerk it out or do I need to pry it out? When I bought the seal at O'reilly the guy behind the counter acted like it was just a near impossible thing to do. He said man you are gonna mess something up real bad if not careful. I said thanks a lot, have you heard of Volvospeed? And he said what? I said thats what I thought, that is my ace in the hole no thanks to guys like you! :P
  10. you didn't answer anything?
  11. this is the seal from O'reilly, does it look like the right one? Also, they didn't have the hub puller but gave me this other thing (I think it is a gear puller) and said it would work fine also. Anyone ever used something like that? The other pic is my assistant mechanic but I can't get him to do anything because he is always chewing on his hands or fingers!
  12. Darrell Waltrip Volvo in Franklin tn. has it for $25 and O'reilly has it for $15. Darrell Waltrip is 30 miles form my house and O'reilly is 13. Where do you think I'm going? Please tell me it is o.k. to buyt this from O'reilly. Also, when I get old axle and seal out will it leak ATF until I get new one in?
  13. can I get a new seal at auto parts store or only at the stealership?
  14. I'm just gonna get a puller to be safe since when I start hitting things I tend to get carried away. The bolts holding the bearing, is that the thing that just looks like a big bracket that is holding the axle and the two bolts are 12mm I think? I broke those loose last night and they were pretty easy. I'm sorry I'm not getting the seal part. Is the seal where the axle goes into the transaxle? I thought you just stuck the new axle in? I guess I'll ask Auotzone for a seal puller as well as hub puller. Sorry for being so slow about this but I can't afford to mess up, I just want to do it right the first time.
  15. I seperated the A-arm because I was going by Bay 13 instructions on hub removal and it said seperate A-arm and then remove axle from splines.
  16. O.K. how do you put new seals in the tranny? No one had mentioned this before just said it was straight forward by pulling old one out and putting new one in. I'm glad you said to replace tranny seals. This is passenger side axle.
  17. forgot to ask, when I get axle seperated from hub then just yank it til it comes out of tranny? Is there some kind of seal or just pull it out and put new one in? I got my new one from raxle.
  18. I was reading javadoc's thread on the passenger side axle removal and installation. Man I'm kind of freaked now. I have axle nut off, two A-arm bolts out and its hanging free, rotor off as I'm replacing those to. Everything is ready to free axle from hub and tranny but I can't get it to budge from hub. I haven't been to aggresive yet because I don't want to hurt something. Can you borrow a hub puller from Autozone?
  19. actually russ I "walked" to the internet and I didn't "whine" I SCREAMED!
  20. I know, but it is rounded off also, good grief.
  21. Unbelievable some of the screws on this Volvo! My radiator drain plug is PLASTIC! and the manual says it takes a 6mm allen head. Well, of course it fits right in and when you turn it just freakin turns because the inside is rounded off! Why is this plastic? Because metal doesn't hold up as well to the coolant? How in the heck do I get this stupid thing off? Whoever put it in last time really screwed it up because the outside is rounded off also! Do I just do whatever to get it off and destroy it and buy another one from the dealer? I do like this Volvo but it sure is a freakin headache it seems no matter what you are doing to it!
  22. After reading more and more here on the PCV I got to thinking I didn't really service the whole system like I should have. The dealer just sold me a flame trap, O ring, and the plastic L shaped thing the flame trap goes into. My Chilton manual is just not any help on this at all. I borrowed a Haynes that goes to 1997 and I think it is the same as my 98 V70 non-turbo. Now I guess I have to wait another 4-5 days for whatever parts I need to do this-CRAP! I want to do it right now! I need new gaskets to put manifold back on right? I have searched this topic but just want to be sure exactly what parts I need to do it. RussB I ain't messin with you at all, you were right and I told you I was a rookie! What can I go ahead and do without the freakin parts I don't have right now? I guess I could go ahead and flush the coolant system. Thanks!
  23. I think I am going to go ahead and do the axle. Is there step by step instructions on Bay 13?
