  1. On the ECU Conectors-- I'd need to find an OEM source as junkyarding connectors is a really rough way to try and run a business and keep the quality ultra-high.... On running coil packs... you can do this and the 60-2 wheel will work perfectly with the MS-I/MSnS-E wheel decoder, but it's a step or two up in complexity in building out your system. Very do-able though....
  2. Let's work through the details, and assuming I can find the connector which is often the hardest part; This may not be a problem....
  3. What years are the first gen/second gen? And yes that sounds like the ignitor to me and most stock ignitors work fine with the MS. (I've never had one fail to myself).
  4. Also-- just to clarify: Are all of you running motors with the same ignition system? A 60-2 wheel at crank speed with the VR sensor, and a distributor with single coil? Note that when this order goes through, if you buy assembled units you'll need them setup for the VR input. It's free for us to do when filling the order. Also-- does it have an external ignitor that fires the coil or is the coil/ignitor or maybe even coil/ignitor/distributor all one piece?
  5. Sounds good. In the meantime I'd recommend anyone interested just read through the MegaManual at www.megasquirt.info from cover to cover... maybe more than once. It starts to come together and make sense and you'll be glad you took a little time to read it all. Even if you were installing another brand of ECU there is a TON of good information in the MegaManual.
  6. A single coil driver will be installed, but normally not enabled. If you need it enabled we can do that without a problem (on request). You should be able to drive any standard coil with this and I haven't heard of any that don't work. Ignitors are triggered differently sometimes from car to car, but coils are pretty standard in design. And the VB921 is the ignitor in this case so we know how it's driven. Shouldn't be a problem at all! So who's the technical writer of the bunch?
  7. That list will work well for a fuel only system, or a fuel&spark system by loading the MSnS-E firmware. There is a similar MS-II quote here: http://www.diyautotune.com/commonquotes.htm These quotes assume you're using the stock CLT sensor and provide an IAT sensor (since many are located in the stock AFM/MAF and get removed in the installation process).
  8. I can answer any specific question but I've got it written up pretty well at http://www.diyautotune.com/faq/megasquirt_what_do_I_need.htm -- if there's anything to clear up though just let me know! by the way-- I've PM'd che_admin about Vendor status and such.... Not sure what the details are here.
  9. Is everyone going for assembled units for a GB or kits? Kits are very difficult to discount as I make nearly nothing on them after the labor involved. Assembled units have a small margin that I could use to use offer a bit of a discount on 6-10 units. As for the 'cheap can't be as good' argument, I'll be glad to offer a second group buy at triple the price .... There are MANY people that will argue that if you can make the MS do most anything you need it too and that it's more than enough for a race or street car. I've actually got two customers that are making over 1000whp MS'd. One is a 53 Studebaker making about 1200rwhp that will be at SpeedWeek2006 next week, I'm flying up to hang out with him. If 250mph doesn't qualify as a racecar tell me what does... please. The other customer is a 5000lb 4x4 pickup who's best time so far is a 10.08 in the 1/4. Enough to win his class in Drag Week 2005, and the prize? A brand new FAST XFI EMS, everything included. His response? No thanks, I'll stick with my MegaSquirt.... there's no need for anything else. He traded it to someone for some parts. by the way--- this truck is also a daily driver, and he'll be back at Drag Week 2006 this Sept, this year with twin GTS70 turbos. If you want easy and plug-n-play stay away from MS, or most other EMS's for that matter. If you want killer performance without a killer price.... you should at least check it out.
  10. Starting out fuel only and changing to fuel & spark later is actually a great way to go, fuel control is less complex and gives you an opportunity to learn the system, then once you've got it nailed the ignition system control comes much easier than it does to take it all on at once....
  11. With a 60-2 wheel spinning at crank speed you'd have too many trigger events (that would be enough for a 10cyl). As per the ignition article linked above you'd need 5 teeth at cam speed which is half of crank speed. The good news is you can use a 60-2 wheel with MSnS-E or the MS-2 (with distributor) and use the wheel decoder feature. I don't have as much first-hand experience with the wheel decoder as I do with standard trigger wheel/distributor installs, but the guys on the MSnS-E forum, or the MS-II forum could help. The MS-II wheel decoder firmware is in beta right now and soon to be released, you can get the beta though if you wanted. The MSnS-E guys have been doing this forever.... www.msefi.com MSnS-E's wheel decoder can be used for wasted spark or COP as well, and the 60-2 wheel would work fine. This is much more complex though.... And as Tadek said the MAP sensor is builtin to the MS and the standard sensor is good for 21psi of boost. I do have the 'MapDaddy' dual 4-bar sensor with baro correction, which is good for 44psi of boost. It works with any MSnS-E or MS-II ECU. MegaSquirt-I PCBv2.2 – By default a fuel only controller. Free MSnS-E firmware allows full fuel and spark control and a ton of other features. This is cheap, feature packed, and works great. If you are running low-impedance injectors you should also pickup the ‘Flyback board kit’ as an upgrade to the unit. Kit is $134, flyback upgrade kit is $25. Assembled units w/o flyback upgrade are $240. MegaSquirt-I PCBv3.0 – By default a fuel only controller. Free MSnS-E firmware allows full fuel and spark control and a ton of other features. This unit is affordable, feature packed, and works great. Has several upgrades making the unit more robust and harder to damage with a wiring mistake. Also has circuitry to directly drive a coil without an external ignitor (with MSnS-E). No upgrade needed for low-z injectors. Kit is $189. Assembled units are $330. MegaSquirt-II PCBv3.0 – This is the latest/greatest unit with lots of new and improved features including a finer degree of fuel control (great for tuning idle with large injectors) and native ignition control. This is an affordable and feature packed unit that was just recently released and will be further developed to add more and more features over time. As this is based on the PCB3.0 it also has several upgrades making the unit more robust and harder to damage with a wiring mistake. Also has circuitry to directly drive a coil without an external ignitor. No upgrade needed for low-z injectors. Kit is $250. Assembled units are $410. What is the difference between the MegaSquirt PCB 2.2 and the PCB 3.0? They are both able to use the MegaSquirt-I CPU or the MegaSquirt-II daughterboard, but they are based on different versions of the circuit board. All of the improvements with the V3 board are listed here: http://www.megasquirt.info/ms2/pcb.htm The main high level differences are that the uprated flyback circuitry is included so you can run low or high impedance injectors, there are several improvements to make the board more robust and harder to damage in the event of a mis-wire or overload event. A prototyping area was adding to the PCB, and several changes were made to prepare the board for the future including the now available MegaSquirt-II CPU and upcoming releases such as the GPIO and Router boards.
  12. This is Jerry Hoffmann from DIYAutoTune.com. Mike sent me a link to this thread so I could drop by. You can use the MS-I or MS-II on a fuel only, or a fuel and ignition control application. As Tadek said you need one trigger event for each cylinder firing. That's all it needs to calculate proper engine RPM and once you set the base timing it's ready to rock. (So yes 5cyl is no problem with a 5 position trigger wheel, equally spaced) The MS-I will need the MSnS-E firmware for fuel and spark control, or you can run the standard MS-I firmware for fuel only. MSnS-E can be used for fuel only implementations as well and you get some improved and optional features you can implement. The MS-II will do fuel or fuel and spark using the standard firmware. Here's an article I wrote that covers the supported ignition options for those of you that might want to go for full control: http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_articles/m...ion_control.htm And here's our FAQ with alot of juicy info: http://www.diyautotune.com/faq/faq.htm I subscribed to this thread so I'll get any replies, if you have any questions just ask!
