As a "portrait", the first shot should just be deleted.  Sent to the hopper.  It has 0 engagement.  Lighting is terrible.  It's poorly composed and you never want a portrait where the only thing you can see in the eyes is the whites.

The second photo is leaps and bounds better and the lighting is largely improved, although the (yes I know it's a candid photo) lighting is harsh casting a shadow over the eye sockets.  Still not a great portrait, but 1000x better than the first.

The last shot is great.  Lighting is great.  Subject engagement is great.  Composition is great.  Thumbs up.  Do more of that.

Greg, what's your opinion on going with 3rd party companies for the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8? I've been reading around about Sigma and Tamron variants, and it seems like each of them excel in different areas, while the Nikkor ones essentially are the best at covering both aspects.

One option I was thinking of going for was picking up a used Sigma for now, and then after using that for a bit, grab myself a Nikkor VRII version, but then I'm also thinking that would be silly and I should just spend that little bit more for a VRI then grab a VRII later on when I'm ready.

The sigma and tamron lenses are now viable options.  They're great lenses, but the nikkor lenses excel over both.  The Nikkor 70-200 VRII is just amazing.  My new nikkor 24-70 2.8 VR is awesome, but it has a lot of chromatic aberrations, it's the only lens I actually have to fix in post for this.  Otherwise, it's amazing and it's so sharp.  The VR works great too.

    Great price for that too!

24-70 f2.8 has been on my mind (along with the 70-200 f2.8), I just don't know whether to pull the trigger on them now, or take a bit more time to figure out where exactly I want to go with my photography.

Well, wherever you go, you should have BOTH of those lenses. They're standards for every bag in every genre.

I need to send my 70-200 out for repair. The aperture blades are sticking. I haven't used it since I got the 200mm f2 VR. BUT, I have a job coming up soon at a location I've shot before with the 200f2 and the 70-200 is the better lens for the job due to distance constraints.

Hey Mr.Greg, how much are you looking at for the 24-70?

$1200 shipped with caps, hood, box, and lens bag.  Only has some slight scuff marks on the body where the 24-70 tag is (gold has rubbed off).  Lens has been cleaned by Nikon twice.

yeah I know, i just loves the laugh... It sucks, I wish I didnt have the 24-120 on the camera at the time. That lens Blows donkey balls in low light.

While your here let me ask you a question as you are a Pro... All around mid range zoom, 18-200 VR?

The only lens like that I have experience with is the 28-300VR which is a great lens.  I used it for roller shots for a while. I actually need to sell mine.  I picked up the new 24-70 f2.8VR and need to sell 28-300VR and the 24-70 f2.8.

Some samples with the 28-300 VR.
