  1. I'm sorry but I can't see this as a great example it just sounds like maybe you've been spoiled for too long making money out of thin air. First of all the whole idea seems to be that simply owning property for a while and then selling it on will make you rich. Thinking like that was what helped the financial crisis to get as big as it did. "House prices can only go up! Don't worry about those mortgage payments your house will be worth more than you're paying for it!" That seems to be what you're suggesting. Property is not guaranteed to go only one way, but it is a very good protection against inflation. The 4% inflation part at the end is bullshit, if inflation is high your real estate value will go with it. It's based on supply and demand not so much the value of the currency it's priced in. That makes it a heck of a lot safer to invest than to put your 1 million in a bank account or into the stock market (of course there are safe inflation-resistant stocks out there as well but just saying) but that does not mean its a "free money" scheme. When you trade capital for a profit you are not creating anything of value. You're betting that the economy will grow on behalf of others and prices will go up. If they don't, you are out of luck. If they do, you make more money for no reason except that you already had some money in the first place. I don't see taxes on thàt as a bad thing. If you would have argued for example that manufacturing (you know, actually creating some added value) needs to be stimulated with tax breaks I'd be the first to agree. Your example still made a net 4.4% yearly which is nothing to cry about. And it's not like there are no tax loopholes and loads of tax deductible things that you can factor in. You don't think there are any taxes overseas? Not every country has a capital gains tax, but that just means they're taxing elsewhere. The US still has a very low tax take as part of GDP compared to most developed nations. Developing nations are something else, because basically they are still shit poor. You can't have your cake and eat it too. All that civilization when you step out the door isn't free. God forbid anyone would have to do some actual work to keep the show going
  2. Doesn't matter really, for a 3rd party candidate to be electable he'd have to be as populist and stupid as the ones currently available from the 2 main parties. The electorate gets the candidates it deserves.
  3. Weird pic from the top of a lighthouse in Norway. Lots of mirrors and glass around. In the back of a 1930s Buick, driver from the same period. Barely visible a Fjord with a cruise ship in it. Trevi fountains, Rome Finally got my 16-35 L II back now....was a 450$ fix. 20$ parts the rest labour :s
  4. It would probably influence everybody's lifestyle as society would be considerably different from what it is now. There's a reason that prosperous developed nations all have some kind of social security. The alternative isn't very pretty. Also it wouldn't do the economy any good with people defaulting on loans left right and center as soon as they lost their job for whatever reason. There is always the bigger picture that most prefer to ignore.
  5. That's not going to change. Interesting statement coming from you btw! People are easy enough to fool because hardly anybody knows how the world or the country in question actually works. They'll go for whatever sounds best to them and they don't like any clever geeks telling them what they should or shouldn't do. About the hand-outs, only difference between parties is who they hand out to.
  6. How's that any different from the fundraisers all the other politicans do right, left and center? No doubt about that! I'm not actually arguing for anything or anyone..but rather I'm saying all major politicians are the same and you're wasting your time thinking one side is better than the other. If anything all this nonsense of dems vs reps is brilliant for them, takes the attention away from all the stuff that's really fucked up. Again, people get the politicians they deserve.
  7. Would be funny if it wasn't so scary. People elect the politicians they deserve though..so if you live in a democratic country with an above average amount of idiots you're shit out of luck.
  8. That's pretty much a guarantee really, regardless of party.
  9. Cant compare on the dyno, it takes almost twice the time on the road depending on dyno. Dynojet would probably only take 5 secs No wind resistance, no weight to move etc. Would be interesting to see how much quicker it is FWD on the road, I would think something like 1.5 seconds maybe.
  10. Well I did mention a real 300 awhp 300 awhp would beat 300 fwhp all else being equal because the losses to accelerate the rear wheels are included though it does mean the first needs considerably more at the crank. V70 XC 98 should be about 200 kgs more than a similar 850. Very considerable, but the handicap reduces as speeds go up. Its more of a penalty for 0-60 than at 100+ mph. I see chipped S60R doing somewhere in the 13 second area, they are also heavy, AWD and not quite 300 at the wheels. lets say 12 seconds @ 300 then Of course he should have more than that..
  11. yeah you do have more shifts in there, but on the other hand the gearing is a bit shorter so you gain back some of the time you lose during shifts. I am sure AWD sucks up a good deal of performance but its really very far off what I would expect still. A stock 300 crank S60R AWD will be doing 14-15 second 62-124s. Weight does matter, but less so once up to speed. The higher the speed the more its about aero less about weight. FWIW the best time I ever did in the 850 on a cold winter night was 7.8 seconds GPS verified. But thats unusually fast - similar to a murcielago or 997tt. The M56 4.45 gearing is perfect for that (1 shift) and it was cold out. Still it was with less than 400whp. If you could have an actual 300 awhp getting to the ground I would expect 10-11 second runs.
  12. Was this uphill again H or flat? With the numbers you saw on that dyno I dont completely understand why your 62-124mph is still well over 14 seconds..whats your best time for that bracket? When my car was making 315 on a dynojet a few years ago it was doing 9.5 secs. I know about AWD but it should be faster than that at this boost. My chipped 15G was in the 14.5-15 range IIRC.
  13. You could call it a functional fracture. That part is "supposed" to break off protecting the lens itself when it gets dropped. Unfortunately the 4 plastic tabs that hold it on are much too weak, you can find dozens of 16-35's broken this way some did it even when being fitted to a body. It is repairable, just a lot of hassle and 250-300 bucks in Europe to get it done. It's always the 16-35 II, the first version doesn't have this issue. I found the 17-35 to have quite a lot of barrel distortion at the wide end compared to the canon. I think it's been replaced with a newer model 17-50 some time ago, but for 250$ it's definitely not a bad lens, it would fare better on a crop body I'm sure.
  14. Shot from our room in the Oriental hotel, Bangkok. Cost me a bit of sleep because the lightning bolts were few and far between and when they did occur my shutter was usually closed Had to use a frikking Tamron 17-35 a friend gave me because the day before a waitress at breakfast dropped my bag and that didn't do my 16-35 any good (had been expecting this to happen for some time though..worst built L lens)
  15. Good to see it running again H bad luck lately! Was that 60-130 on a hill or flat? If I'm reading that right it took 16 seconds, what boost was that (I remember you saying boost logging is reading X psi too low)
  16. It was a vacation with a little work mixed in, it was indeed a nice location. We spread the work out over a few evenings (very bright sun until ~4PM anyway) she was sunburnt in the end. She's a bit of a fashion icon and she wants it the way she wants it...you should see the "slimming" work done on her afterwards! I always feel my pics get ruined in the end Always a lot of arguing going on here at home about how to process the pics Straight from the cam it looked like this (well...after RAW conversion)
  17. No this was at Anantara Khivanah http://kihavah-maldives.anantara.com/default.aspx
  18. Russian girl in the Maldives. She had a lot of say in the post processing lol
  19. Was linked to this, pretty astonishing timelapse (basically composed by stills from a Canon 5DII)
  20. That's nice but you'd have to trust you get exactly the same grade of gas every time you fill up. And not live in a place that sees large ambient temp swings. And hope you never get any kind of fuel pressure/delivery problem. I'll take something that can be used 24/7 to detect knock thank you! (and probably save the det cans for the dyno)
  21. In that case I would much prefer to disconnect them altogether and hook up an advanced knock detection kit which is around 300$ but will let you know exactly what's going on (if you're going to take away some of the ECU's timing correction ability you better make sure that at least YOU know what's going on) I do not believe changing the sensitivity is going to be a breakthrough in M4.4 tuning, but I could always be proven wrong. Still would prefer my method however.
  22. There's nothing more to M4.X that would help you make more power. It's just not there. It's nevertheless possible to make well over 500hp with the stock ECU (and thus TT) I believe Sweden has a 700+ one (several probably) Just you need to know how I'm guessing from experience how the stuff behaves - what works and what doesn't. Remember it was never made specifically for "tuning", its OEM stuff. You're hacking it rather than using its intended function therein lies the difference.
  23. It's certainly silly to get offended by a religious part of "the pledge", but taking the whole pledge thing seriously is too IMHO. This whole american way of taking nationalism with a religious amount of seriousness is freaky. It's only a country like many others. A better standard of life than many others, worse than some others, ups and downs like everywhere else. It's a sad state when everybody is falling over themselves to display patriotism and love for the country they just happened to be born in, or came to live in for practical reasons. If any politician even dares to imply that there may be other countries that are not any worse he'll get jumped on by the flag waving ones smelling a free dinner. Again not unlike religion. It only reinforces an "us vs them" mentality based on ignorance which does not get you anywhere. You can love your country all you want, good for you, just stop taking everything so bloody seriously. I would certainly refuse to recite a pledge of allegiance to any country I am in because it is a fucking waste of time I could be doing something slightly more meaningful with like watching paint dry.
  24. Either way if the cooling on that dyno is as bad as Hussein said, and its obviously heavy load then it is no surprise the results are as bad as they were. And makes the dyno useless. All that extra timing he sees on the road is definitely a good amount of power that we can only guess at.
