Totally agree. I'm tired of all these fat cats not doing jack for the American people and just making themselves and their cronies rich. How is a politician ever supposed to do the right thing if they owe $billions$ in favors to all the folks that got them elected?
-
Bush doesn't like him. Most Republicans outside his home state don't like him. A political hack job from the left? Are they, by chance, the same folks that dragged OJ into court? :monkey:

B)--> QUOTE(Plan B @ Sep 29 2005, 09:01 AM) ←Do you believe everything you read?.... No, but apparently you do. This guy's been linked to plenty of unscrupulous dealings. I never said he was guilty, just another charge........ time will tell.

I'll fix it for you. I need the gov't.
-
Ohhhhhh. So i guess you think it won't be taken care of? Are you saying that Bush is saying it to avoid criticism but will not follow through? Time will tell. New Orleans will be rebuilt by our government because it is their responsibility. Like I said. Take some political theory classes before you speculate things you obviously have an oversimplified view on. Telling people to grow up is just a smokescreen for not knowing what your talking about. I find that users of that phrase usually have the MOST growing up to do themselves........
-
Magic? Who said anything about magic or witchcraft? Communism? irrevelant. Apparently the President agrees that it IS our government's responsibility: http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/16/bush.main/index.html It probably wouldn't hurt for you guys to take some political theory classes before characterizing disaster relief as communism. Call people "son" if ya want. Tell people to "grow up". If you are unable to put together a coherent retort, no amount of condescension will make it for you...........
-
Wrong. The gov't WASTES billions on porkbarrel contracts. It's time to tighten the belt and do the right thing. This isn't a money issue anyway. Bush has already committed more than enough $$$. It's about holding the people in control accountable for what happens to the ca$h. Geez our budget is so screwed up......
-
Ha! So having compassion and wanting to do the right thing in a disaster make me communist? Once again, you're confused. Communism refers to a societal ideology. Taking care of one's people in the face of a disaster has zero to do with that. Being against welfare, social security, affirmative action, subsidized housing, capital gains taxes, etc. are unrelated to how someone feels a "first world" country needs to handle a disaster such as this. Not enough money to do it right? Now I REALLY feel a big hole in my wallet! Where the f#$%! have all our tax dollars gone? My career has plenty of mobility. However, I also have $3/4M in real estate here. In the event of disaster, I would have no way of simply "grabbing my toys" and moving on without leaving MAJOR loose ends here.
-
So let me get this straight. The flood only hit the buildings housing the homeless? Wait. If they lived in buildings how could they be homeless? Let me fix this for you: ???? Why are you so confused? This isn't about society. It's about disaster relief. It shouldn't matter if somebody's residence was penthouse #11 or the city park. Until we can repair the city so that people may return, they need accommodations.

First off, I'd be surprised if many aren't helping out. Most can't help on-site, but have donated supplies and money. Disaster relief is most certainly NOT the citizens' responsibility. We should help because it's the right thing to do. However, we also pay BILLIONS in taxes. The gov't is obligated to handle the situation in an equitable and organized manner, with or without the help of private citizens. We don't need the police if there's no crime. We don't need the Army if there's no war. We don't need FEMA if there's no emergencies. A perfect world needs no government. The government is there SPECIFICALLY to help citizens when they are unable to help themselves. It's ironic that you folks liken disaster victims to welfare recipients. 90% of these victims are working people with residences and jobs that are currently underwater. Anybody who thinks that working Americans want to drag this thing out and ride the guv'ment cheese train any longer than they have to is plain ignorant. These people just want to get back to some semblance of "normal" life. Back on topic: DeLay is a big a$$hole for making light of people's hardship.
-
Sure have. They, at least, had shacks. In protecting us that includes protecting our prosperity. Why do you think it's more attractive to invest on American soil than on Sudanese? We have a stable gov't which protects the rights of private property owners. Hurricane Katrina was, simply, a hurricane. Her effects, however, were 100X more damaging than necessary due to the gov't's decision NOT to provide adequate protection from weather that was inevitable. The victims deserve to live in a manner which is acceptable under western culture, not camping in public places. If we can't treat our own people at least as well as the Iraqis, it's time for a serious gut check. You're right, it's not! That's why we must punish the citizens of New Orleans for having a huge hurricane without the walls to prevent massive destruction!!
-
Probably true. However, hotel rooms with microwaves and frozen food would be a good start. There are MILLIONS of hotel rooms in this country.

Did you miss the first post in the thread? I was complaining about DeLay's "summer camp" remark. Regardless...... This is America, not Nigeria. Supposedly one of the more advanced countries in the world. These medium-term refugees are still living in makeshift accommodations. Nobody asked to have their houses and livelihoods washed away. These people need residences (with kitchens, bedrooms and furniture) and subsistence in the meantime. Call them whatever you want. The fact remains that these refugees did not cause the hurricane. Go ahead, keep making light of the situation. I'm sure yours and DeLay's "caring" attitudes will perpetuate this "third world" treatment of the problem. I'm a Republican who will vote against welfare EVERY time. However, I'm also a patriot who believes that we pay billions in taxes so that our gov't is equipped to take care of dire situations such as this one. There are no excuses for American people displaced by disaster to endure third world living conditions.
-
And how does all that make it "summer camp"? My only point is the problem needs to be fixed. Calling it summer camp ain't gonna fix it. Blaming FEMA, Bush or the refugees themselves ain't gonna fix it. Sorry, but I'm not the "poor me" kind of guy. Even if I were a resident of New Orleans before the hurricane I have other places I can go with no problem. The people who need help aren't folks like me. They're the working class whose jobs and houses are gone. Most folks like that don't have $100K laying around for that rainy (very rainy) day.
