Utah Hp Tases Speeder

according to the article the cop could have written "refuses to sign" on the ticket and given it to the guy and that would have been that. instead, the cop decided to escalate the situation. the reason he chose to do that was obviously to prove to this guy that he was the one in charge and that he could make this guy do whatever he wanted.

that's complete bs. cops should NEVER escalate a situation. all that accomplishes is to put both the citizen and the officer in greater and unnecessary danger.

the cop also could have explained to the guy that signing only means he agrees to show up in court and acknowledges receipt of the ticket, and not that he admits guilt. it was also pretty obvious that the guy was completely willing to cooperate with the officer. he wouldn't have gotten out of the car if he wasn't, he would have tried to drive off.

the bottom line though is that the cop chose to put everyone's safety at risk to make a point to this guy instead of just giving him the ticket. that is not professional, and it is way below what i expect of police officers.

That was cooperative? He argued the whole time and resisted arrest. I don't consider that cooperative. Now, the cop had no reason to arrest the guy, and he didn't defuse the situation when he easily could have.

I don't know why you guys are siding with the cop...it was totally unnecessary to tase that guy. The cop should get the same done to him and then be dismissed of any future cop duties in any state.

The problem is that when a man puts on a uniform, the arrogance comes.

I see a Canadian theme. Canadian Thanksgiving was last month right? Isnt that when French pilgrims left France to escape fighting in a war and landed in what is now Canada. The pilgrims killed a donkey and now every year you guys eat ass on thanksgiving?

Just a little history for you guys.

I hate it when LEOs don't answer "simple" questions. Heck, I always ask what I can when it's being taped to make my life easier when I see the LEO in court... but at the same time I shut the hell up when told to do so. Thin line between tazed and frustrated, just sucks when you cross it. Personally I'd say that LEO was in the right and that guy just pushed his luck too far.

Him turning, walking away, and placing hand in pocket made a world of difference. Joe used the term "thin line", and he's right. And this dude crossed it. I think that the cop was being a bit ridiculous by not answering his questions, however he was only returning the favor. I've found with most cops, if you don't treat them nice, they're happy to be a dick in return. Tasing him was not a proper "being a dick" response, but again, you turn your back, walk away, and place hands in pockets....

Common now, seriously, is anyone, that surprised?

That would be correct for most people since cops are people too.

It seems a little extreme, and I might not have tazered the guy at that point - but he was being uncooperative. While it was just a speeding ticket, when you refuse to sign it you will be arrested. When he refuses to listen to the officer and starts walking towards the car and puts his hand in his pockets, he's borderline headed towards resisting arrest in the mind of a young cop who isn't going to take a chance that he's going to get hurt while writing a routine traffic ticket. Basically, the cop decided to not take *any* chances. He got tazed. He'll get over it.

If the cop was just doing what he felt he needed to in order to remain safe, he was within his rights.

  • 4 weeks later...

That cop is going to get roasted... just you watch. Dude had a kid in the car too.

Oh I agree..... no wait. I said the dumb ass had it coming. Oh look! IAB cleared him:

On November 30th, 2007, the Utah Department of Public Safety concluded their investigation of the incident where Jared Massey got tasered by Utah Highway Patrol Trooper John Gardner, and have cleared Trooper Gardner of any wrongdoing, characterizing the trooper's use of the Taser as "justified"

So yet again to all you hippies. Stop being douches and making everyone else's life hard.
