The Chronicles Of Area 34, formerly 55

Well.. If you have a Volvo turbo history the raw performance of the car maybe isn't that impressive. For example it is slower to 125 mph than my former red 850 and also the white S70.

Both of these cars also had an LSD fitted and a KW sport suspension, V3 in case of the 850, so from a traction point of view the difference isn't that big either.

What it does very well is the whole combined act. The gearbox is short ratio so 60 to 125 needs 2 shifts but it picks up so extremely accurate after shifting with a nice pop from the exhaust and all that it doesn't matter that much it is a bit slower. With the revised airbox with it's growl over 9 psi the blow off can also be noticed very well. Stock for stock it is a lot faster compared to an S60R. It also proves beyond doubt that the RS people were correct in thinking AWD isn't needed. It still is a reasonably heavy car using 235/35-19 tires with heavy TüV approved rims and from that point of view the performance of this "stock" car is impressive. Added to that there are the red leather seats, NAV, Reverse camera, parking support, adjustable power steering, BT, USB/Aux/iPod connection etc. It isn't really missing anything except CC which strangely enough isn't available on this car, also not as an option. With all the fun there simply is no time left to make video's.. :D

AFAIK the K16 is the same as used on the regular RS operating only at a 1 psi higher pressure. The intercooler is a larger aftermarket ProAlloy cooler, downpipe has been changed slightly, higher capacity fuel pump, revised airbox and slightly altered rear suspension settings.

How different is the setup under the hood compared to a C30 T5?

I watch a few videos on the RS and they had high praise for both the steering and the handling. How does it compare to the C30's you have owned/drove?

I am assuming its built on the same platform, so I am curious what differences you have noticed.

I am assuming its built on the same platform, so I am curious what differences you have noticed.

Compared to the C30T5 it has been a while since I have last driven that car so a bit hard to tell. My current C30 has a lot less weight and also a lot less power which makes is a completely different experience. The handling of the RS is very precise. The rear axle under load is softer than one might expect given that the suspension is pretty firm in normal operation. The steering partially comes from the rear axle. With the somewhat softer and deeper suspension movements and the firmer top dampening there is a weird sensation when the power comes on because you can feel de rear compress which adds to the speed sensation. My C30T5 wasn't really more comfortable but had softer top dampening while the rear suspension didn't move that much making the rear feel more like a non steering solid axle so to speak. Also the Volvo's DSTC didn't allow to be totally turned off and the RS clearly allows more angle at the rear.

The wider track and bigger rims and tires make the RS feel more like a larger car.

The C30T5 was ~90 HP down on power and the gearbox ratio's were longer. The nice thing about the C30 was that the power was just adequate for the ratio's to make the car accelerate very smooth and pretty quick but I have always been under the impression that the ratio's were a tad to long making the whole thing feel less sportive.

With the RS it's the opposite. The torque comes on hard. At WOT no matter how slow or quick you shift the power is back on immediately at full boost without a bog. Pretty impressive. No hesitation whatsoever it's just there. This combined with a shorter ratio gearbox makes it a hard working job paddling through the gears but this also leaves the impression that maybe this car could have used slightly longer ratio's because 60-125 needs a shift at 87 mph and at 112 mph. I think if it were ~86 mph and ~127 mph the car would make more distance for it's power.

For the engine differences, the C30 engine is an LPT engine. 9:1 compression using the normal LPT rods and pistons. The crank is shared with the former R and also the dual VVT LPT RN engine using the longer 93.2 mm stroke. Turbo is a K04 with a ~60 mm diameter exhaust system.

The RS uses the same block as the LPT but strengthening was done in the casting process, The cylinder liners are sprayed with an alloy coating to improve the binding of the cast alloy to the liners. The result is a better transfer of heat from the liners to the coolant chamber. It also prevents liners to loosen itself from the cast alloy which apparently it the biggest reason why these larger bore engine's start to crack over time. Same crank as LPT is used. Rods and pistons appear to be identical to what has been used in the R engine's although Ford propaganda likes us to believe otherwise. Compression 8.5:1 which makes it HPT. The head is identical, MLS headgasket similar like the used R appears to be used, never seen so can't confirm. Cooling pattern and flow is different so not interchangeable with RN type engine. Cams I don't know. Same propaganda applies, probably very similar to the R engine but RNC cams have slightly difference placement of the axial bearing so the aren't interchangeable with RN cams. Radiator unknown. Heat exchanger probably a tad larger than RN type exchanger. K16 turbo using same exhaust side layout as K04. Don't know about runner sizes.

Airbox is different,

intake pipe and MAF are completely different compared to the RNC LPT engine,

Volvo LPT has airfilter placed against the plenum but has been removed from the RS engine,

The car looks great!

Really wish it was over here! :D

What trans does it have - I may have missed where you mentioned that...

So, how many miles for break in period before you push it hard?

Just came home from a short fun vacation offered by the family and friends because of my 12.5 years wedding anniversary..

The deal was that daddy had to go shopping with mommy and mommy had to allow daddy some fun at a well known Dutch race track.. For this to happen I was offered a thing called "Race Experience" , a whole day at the track driving different cars, go-kart, Quad, offroad and also single seater (If possible..)

Left home Tuesday afternoon direction Zandvoort. Wife had booked a hotel for 2 nights and the kids were "outsourced".. Of course the day started with the shopping part because the track day started Wednesday morning at 11.. Lucky for me the shops closed early.. anyway, couldn't wait till it was next morning.. :D

We arrived at the track near 10 and after a briefing 4 groups were formed with about 20 people each. My group consisted of 15 people and we started with a small drag race course driving Dodge Chargers. One practice run and two competition runs driving each lane once to eliminate the differences between lanes.

Next there was a Go Kart challenge. Very simple track. Group was divided in 3 groups and the fastest 2 of each group had to drive the finals. Turned out I was quick enough to do finals and to my surprise I won the finals.. yippee.. :P

After that we went to the pit lane where several track prepared cars were waiting.

First there was what they called a BMW 1 series Cup lookalike. Several years ago there was a race class called the BMW 130i Cup where they raced specially prepped BMW 130i's. The cars we were allowed to drive were more or less stock BMW's with interior removed and a roll cage added. Cars were also on light weight OZ rims and semi's. 3 groups, 5 cars per stint and the plan was to follow the leader with fixed distance in between and follow the lines driven by the leader. Of course there are people who can't drive and if the train became to long the speed was lowered until the train was complete again. If all went as planned there was reasonable speed in there, at least fast enough for a nice thrill in an unknown car. Very nice car to drive btw.

After 2 and a half lap we had gained enough experience and were promoted to Porsche Cup..

Base car was a 997 Carrera PDK with Roll cage and a GT3 wing added. Interior was removed for the most part. Car was cramped and I bumped my helmet against the roll cage but that wouldn't spoil the fun. Same system follow the leader with 5 cars on track. Speed was up a bit, again just enough to have some fun without worrying wrecking a car. TC was enabled on all cars and button disconnected so the cars only allowed a small drift angle which could be noticed on a few occasions. In the first lap the car showed a bit of understeer which I tried to overcome by applying some more throttle. I'm not a Porsche driver so what the hell do I know but the car seemed to like some more throttle at certain placed and the next lap the car felt better. Of course time flies and soom we were heading back to the pit lane again.

After that it was time for lunch but a bit to tasty for the next event..

It was offroad time. First there was Quad driving. A small bumpy track with steep banking. Was fun for 2 minutes, we had to drive for 5 minutes.. :pizza:

Next was offroad driving with a Suzuki Jeep and a small competition driving the car as close as possible to an obstacle. In reverse.. where you couldn't see sjips.. :D

Was fun and lunch had a rematch.. :pizza:

Next there was the part which I already knew wasn't the right thing for me.. Single seaters.. They simply don't fit.. :(

nofit.jpg

As an alternative I was offered a passenger ride in a Renault Clio Cup racer. Which berely fit btw. Seat was plain uncomfortable because my butt was to wide but I didn't want to miss it so tried to make it as comfortable and possible.

The biggest thrill of the day by far. The driver was an experienced GT4 driver with good knowledge of the track and the guy went all out. Amazing car control and grippy tires made it a very fun and fast ride. The sequential gearbox is gorgeous!

I'm 1.91 mtr. Near 6'3" ?

Anyway.. After the Clio thrill there was the Drift experience. Ford Mustang, water spray "cooled" rear tires to reduce the tire wear. The driver knew his way around. Very fun experience and great to see how long these guys can keep the car in a drift. The flip over from full luck left to full lock right also went very smooth. Pretty comfortable actually. Those Ford Mustang seats i mean. :)

driftcar.jpg

After the drifting we were allowed to drive a few laps on the track with your own car. Same system follow the leader which was one of the drift Mustangs.

Speed was OK for a first run on the track, Later on the speed went up a little and the Mustang driver went WOT in the middle of the track just to see if the RS500 could follow which it did without to much effort.. B)

Although far from the limit of course i must say the RS500 is a delight to drive on the track.

Last 3 laps the wife drove with me as a passenger but it went a bit to fast for her.. She does have an issue with motion sickness and i thought it was very brave she tried anyway.

"A stone marten attacked my car," is that like the Netherlands equivalent of a squirrel made a nest in my engine bay or an iguana in my dashboard? Maybe he thought it was a giant chicken and went in for the kill? ;)
