I was curious so I dug up some numbers just to see ...

4,486 US soldiers were killed in Iraq between 2003 and 2012.

4,773 people were murdered in Chicago in the same timeframe.

Maybe the military needs to invade Chicago in order to interdict the ongoing drug trade and gang warfare that is driving this death toll. It's not really Chicago, it's certain south side and western neighborhoods - basically where the poor people live.

Wait, the majority of the deaths are gang bangers killing each other. Sounds like they're keeping their own growth in check. ;)

A very enlightening addition to the conversation. Tim Dickinson does what might either be called a "hatchet job" or "full expose" of the NRA and how it has evolved in the last 20 years. It's a pretty well written story and feeds the frenzy that the NRA is more about selling guns than it is about supporting 2nd Amendment rights. His article would have more power if he weren't a San Francisco progressive though.

Though the Dickinson falls on his face in at least one specific - he sticks to the "assault weapon" moniker. That's the biggest fault I can find in his writing.

If only mass murders were even a blip in the totality of gun related deaths each year. If only "long guns" were more than a few percentage points of the homicides that happen each year. If only half the gun related deaths each year weren't suicides. It's easy to find these faults in the article's logic, but it's worth considering who the NRA really speaks for and why.

Money quotes:

Like every other element of today's modern conservative machinery, the NRA works in the background to expand corporate power – while pretending in public to advance the interests of the little guy. The NRA continues to put forward its members as the face of the organization. But dues from members bring in less than half of the association's yearly expenses, which include spending heavily on a sophisticated telemarketing campaign to sustain its membership.

To stay afloat, the NRA relies on tens of millions in grants and gifts – increasingly linked to the gun industry. Such funds totaled $71 million in 2010 and have been growing twice as fast as membership dues have.

Of the top 15 gun manufacturers, 11 now manufacture assault weapons, many of them variants of the AR-15 – derived from a military rifle designed to kill enemy soldiers at close-to-medium range with little marksmanship. The industry loves these "modern sporting rifles" because they can be tricked out with expensive scopes, loaders, lights and lasers. "Most of the money is in accessories," says Feldman.

As one gun rep recently boasted to an industry publication: "The AR platform is like Legos for grown men."

My only issue with such an article is that the status of the NRA really has nothing to do with the point.

I couldn't give 2 shatz less what they say about anything and I'm not a member.

I appreciate the political pressure regardless of its selfservingness because it accomplishes the goal.

On the whole, I avoid lobbying firms and other bs outlets as much as possible.

The truth is the truth regardless of who is pushing for it (or against it).

This is a great addition to "Dumb things liberals say". They are not "assault weapons". What they are derived from is irrelevent. They are no more or less effective at hitting anything "with little marksmanship" when compared to any other firearm. It's simply more scare tactic bs that is easily on par with anything one could blame the NRA for. "News" is anything but these days ...
