Burn-E
People love to cite how cars kill more people than guns do every day and every year. Hmmm..... if only we required the same level of training, restrictions and licensing for guns that we do for drivers licenses? I wonder what the impact would be? And I'm in before Howard cites the long "If Guns Were Treated Like Cars" Why Not Regulate Guns Like Cars? And one more just to add to the discussion See, I don't have a problem with giving guns to responsible people. But let's test and license as necessary to ensure only responsible people have them.

Piston Slapper
Actually, I'm going to more or less agree with you on that one... I think it's reasonable to require a license/permit for carrying a gun in public like requiring a license to drive on a public road. Where the line is drawn is ownership, because as the post article you linked points out, there's no license or registration requirements for private vehicles on private land not to mention that buying a gun is much more regulated than a car already. Carry permits simply need to be honored everywhere you go in the country just like driver's licenses (as they should be constitutionally under the full faith and credit clause) and not only issued to politicians' buddies and bodyguards like in some states (NY, MD, etc). Ninja attacks don't count They got killed when the Chinese SWAT showed up, clearly not ninjas or they would have vanished.

I think they are an embarrassingly low bar, and emphasize the wrong points. Both should have strong training. And that isn't just a factor of time. Or are you saying that it is a good demonstration of how not enough car training proves that too little gun training is similarly dangerous?has nothing to do with people being the problem. Don't make it so easy to get guns. Make it more difficult to get rounds.By difficult, do you mean that the average upstanding citizen would still be able to get them after meeting the requirements? While we know next to nothing about the recent case, it seems very possible he'd be a prime candidate for meeting even strict requirements. It's nice to think about laws restricting crazy people from getting guns/ammo, but that assumes there is a reliable method for detecting crazy people ahead of time. Burn-E
Oh, I'm totally going European on the licensing requirements for cars. You'll note I didn't call out US State level drivers licenses. Just like I think MOT or TUV would make the US roads safer I think if we're going to license then let's go the EU route - I love the Swedish version of it because it focuses not just on rules of the road but extensive training on how to deal with hazards and maintain your car.
