Ride it till you break stuff :P Really though, have a plan for when you get a flat. Spare tube, patch kit, run sealant, or some combination of that. I'm assuming thorns are as popular where you are as they are up here, which is a lot. A big underseat bag will keep all of that and your phone, or there are canisters that will fit in your water bottle holder.

I've been riding a lot this winter. the strava guys see my rides. Pat was logging a ton before he blew his knee out. our group is closed already for RAGBRAI, but we are called :"" OLD CRANKS"" getting shirts made etc. We hired one of the concierge groups to do our tents etc. Its called BUBBAS. gmsgltr
bike racks... fork mount or stand up? Getting some for our mountain bikes on my GTI.
Fudge_Brownie
Standing up is mildly easier, but IMO way worth it. You get done with the ride, toss the bike up, tighten the clamp and the wheel straps and you're done. Don't forget that a MTB wheel can often be dirty when you're done too. So either you have a separate wheel mount, or the dirty wheel goes in the car. The upright trays are probably going to have a bit more wind-noise though given the extra stuff. What about a hitch-mount? I have roof mount but I'd prefer hitch mount. Nice to have a hitch anyway, less wind noise, less drag, no worries about roof clearance. Easier to reach. The only catch is it can make trunk access a bit more difficult if you want to get in there often.
gmsgltr
I don't really want a hitch on a gti with the rear bumper/diffuser... I already got mavic wheel bags for the "dirty wheels" a week ago when I was going to bite on a really good fork mount deal and lost out on the deal. so now I am open to either bike rack type... Decent deals on Thule gear via Boston Volvo Village. It does say Volvo on the side though http://www.volvovillageparts.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=scat&scatgrp=hauling&scatsubgrp=carriers I bought the "Bicycle Holder, Aluminum" from them. It's a Thule Criterium. From Thule, $189. From BVV, $100. Came with locks too. I've always thought the lift arm setup was strangely fascinating. I've assumed it's also a Thule product, but they don't show it on their site.
