gdog
Excellent work Matt! Really appreciate vids like this that are, not only interesting, but instructional too. I've always wanted to get a welder and learn how to, but haven't so far. For me, and I'm sure lots of others, this is really good stuff. I know nada about welding, but was concerned at first when you were going sleeve-less on your arms; glad to see you transitioned to sleeves in latter part of vid. Any newbie welder should check out pages like this for their own safety: www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/safety_haz/welding/ppe.html Would be interested in a review of the helmet/shield that you got too. Is that one of those where you can actually see through it, w/o an arc going? Without that feature, I'd always be worried I'd start welding with my mask still up (because I need to see what I'm working on!). Was also surprised about no mandrel bends either, but I'm assuming you can't get mandrels with angles even close to as tight as you have there. Imagine you'd get a bit better flow w/mandrels, but likely not that much different. At 3.5" diameter, don't think that should be too big of a concern.. Ill checkout that website. The helmet (3M SPEEDGLASS 9002NC) I got is absolutely fantastic. I went from looking through Vaseline to looking through glass. Its very very clear when there is no arc going and also very clear when there is an arc. I went mandrel because in order to fit 3.5" with all of the AWD crap and good air gaps I need 2" CLR which is only possible with pie cuts. No one will make below 5" CLR for 3.5" OD. My wastegate also dumps to atmosphere so 3.5" with straight through muffler should be plenty for my "4 cyl" up to 1200hp. Finished up the exhaust! Got a bit better at welding and it sounds awesome! Simply Volvo
Exhaust is fully done. I really love the sound of it and its very bearable on the highway with the windows closed. Going to spend the next few weeks getting done a bunch of small things and tying up loose ends.
gmsgltr
love the plate! i forget if i had this convo with you or someone else but you werent worried about the antique plate stipulations? Or maybe thats for 'classic' - ya have to keep the car relatively stock and in your case thats the funniest thing i could ever think of lol

Or maybe thats for 'classic' - ya have to keep the car relatively stock and in your case thats the funniest thing i could ever think of lol No has bothered me and I drove by multiple cops with open downpipes. They saw the plate and went on their business. PA wants their money (and in this case I forked over about $500 all said and done). The official PA documentation says... "A motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year which has been maintained in or restored to a condition which is substantially in conformance with manufacturer specifications." sub·stan·tial·ly - for the most part; essentially. The 850 came AWD from the factory (in some countries and this does not say the motor vehicle must conform with the specs of this country. No emissions or inspection so why should it have to) and on the outside you would never know a thing (except maybe the slightly sporty exhaust). The only things thats really modified is the engine bay and exhaust. Stock body, wheels, brakes, etc etc. I see people driving around slicks, open headers all the time on nice weekends. I'm not going to get hassled... its simply a money thing like everything else in this country. Plus its a 95... PA doesn't even have the emissions equipment anymore (before I was just doing emissions exempt and it always passed inspection). The car has classic insurance (expensive) and can only be registered as an antique with proof of that insurance. No one asked for pictures, no one asked to see, pay the money, get you're plate and be on your way. The car drives maybe 500-1000 miles a year (PA says once or twice a week). So only weekends. Fine with me. Worst comes to worst I go back to emission exempt. Its so easy to get vehicles through PA reg and inspection, emission, etc (at least IMO i never had issues). If they try and say something about a FWD being AWD ill remove the propshaft and say I wanted the rear IRS suspension that rides better. So many grey areas with classic and antiques it would be a waste of tax payer money (and PA is a whore for its money) to hassle those who have them. No one will bother you. I’m sure the stories of people getting bothered aren’t fully accurate. They were probably doing something that was going to get them pulled over anyway. lookforjoe
Nice work, Matt! Yeah, I know from personal experience that cam cover vents create a nightmare when it comes to designing a catch can/ external drain back setup You can get the large Oetiker clamps from McMaster, or Amazon. Using standard worm clamps is a bad idea - you can see where it has already dug into your silicone elbow...

I don't even think the OEM valve cover hose is really even a vent. Its just a equalization hose. Anyway I ended up order some clamps from McMaster the other day and some better 1" hose. I've been using that website a lot the past few months. Next day shipping (even if its at a bit of a premium) and everything anyone can ever imagine! Happy New year H!

lookforjoe
Nice work, Matt. That fuel rail looks awfully familiar Regarding the JPT terminal housings (4pole for original coil) - since you only need 2 wires, you CAN buy the two pole male # 106462-1. TE Connectivity "Automotive Connectors FASTIN-FASTON 2P HSG" The 2 pole female is 282189-1 I use them often & get them from Mouser. The 'Tabs" (male pins) come in a range of AWG crimp sizes, but you can remove the originals from the 4 pole & reuse the factory tabs - there is an awesome tool that does remove the male & female JPT terminals used all over the engine harness. gmsgltr
pa plate convo add on... was reading around on the subject today mainly because of an emissions exemption conversation i had with a friend... classic is 15 years - annual inspection required, emissions exempt antique is 25 years - annual inspection and emissions exempt both are 'occasional use no more than one day a week' lol. I then read that folks in Virginia have gotten fucked over on this before (we all know virginia likes to ticket) i read a few places (nothing official because like you said there are grey areas galore) antiques are limited to 250 mile trips and cannot drive at night - what? none of these things matter because I dont do anything with my car but you actually use/drive yours haha classic plates fit my future interests... less limitations and no emissions tests

Still a couple of your relics live on this car Thats a great idea to just go ahead and convert to 2 pin housings. Wish I would've thought of that... always next time. I have the removal tool on order. 18 hours ago, gmsgltr said: pa plate convo add on... was reading around on the subject today mainly because of an emissions exemption conversation i had with a friend... classic is 15 years - annual inspection required, emissions exempt antique is 25 years - annual inspection and emissions exempt both are 'occasional use no more than one day a week' lol. You can still drive antiques at night as long as they have lights. Honestly I think it would be easier for you to just get emission exempt stickers. Thats what I was doing before. They would throw the emission exempt sticker right on and kinda "look around" for inspection... but your car should have no issues passing inspection.
