Resetting Service Light

Hi

Down below you can find some tricks I came across yesterday at http://www.volvostrader.com/details.php?li=554 . Do these tricks really work? As far as I understood it you can only reset this light with a special tool. Also, there is nothing mentioned for the 98 S70, but didn't the S80 come out 1999 and hence the instructions for the 98 S80 be for the 98 S70 instead.

The light is no biggie, but it still would be nice to have a totally "light free" panel.

Here are few steps which you can take to remove your service light from the dash.

Volvo 1999-2000 - S / V / C70 Models

* Press and Hold odometer reset button

* Turn ignition switch to "run" position

* After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button

* Turn ignition off

* Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

Volvo 1998 - S80 Models

* Turn ignition switch to position 1

* Press and hold the odometer reset button

* Turn ignition switch to position 2

* Wait until service light blinks and then release odometer button

Volvo 1999-2000 - S80 Models

* Turn ignition switch to position 1

* Press and hold "day counter reset button"

* Turn ignition switch to position 2

* Continue holding day counter for approx. 10 seconds

* After SRL flashes, release day counter button

* Should hear "beep-beep" to confirm command accepted

Volvo 2001 - XC 70 Models

* The following steps must be completed with no longer than 5 seconds between each step:

* Make sure the trip meter is in T-1

* Turn ignition key to position 1

* Press and hold trip meter button until zero is shown

* While still holding the trip meter, turn key to position 2

* When original trip mileage returns, release the trip reset button

* Turn key to off

Here's how to reset on a Gen 1 S/V 40

1. Turn the ignition key to the #1 position (accessory),

2. Push in the odometer reset button and hold it there,

3. Turn the ignition switch to the #2 position (on/run),

4. Hold the odometer reset button in until the service light starts flashing, then release the button.

...I happen to like my service light in the 850.

It's like a $60 spa day for my car at the dealer.

If you have a 98, you need the special reset tool.

Not worth it, IMHO, for a periodic reminder light. I removed the bulb.

This is correct. 99 and newer, are reset with trip odo reset button and ignition switch combinations, 96 thru 98 850, S/V 70 are reset with the volvo systems tester, electronic service light reset tools, or similar. Unless.... its a base model car, with the rubber plug in the front of the cluster. there are a few of those out there, with the pushbutton reset feature.

if you have a 98... just take it to a volvo shop and if the guys are cool... slide them $10 or $20 and they can use it really quick.. takes less than 5 mins.

I don't know why anyone would even waste the money to pay someone to reset the light every 5,000 miles.

Either live with the light, as it only stays for the first couple of minutes after the car is started, or remove the bulb in the cluster.

My service comes to $58 every 5k. That's mobil 1, a new filter, and a pretty good wash/interior detail/engine, underbody cleaning.

If I did it myself just the oil change alone would be about $40-45.

So I just consider it a rrequired service for my Volvo. My car treats me very well, and I can afford and don't mind spending the money on basic required services.

The other dealer recommended services I always do myself.

I was referencing Dave's post about slipping someone $10 - $20 just to reset the light. If you paying for the actual service to the car every 5k, that is understandable.

98 850?

:arob:

read carefully, and see what you see there. 96 through 98 850, and S/V 70 series. these are all in the same platform, and I was illustrating which models in the platform have the service light which must be turned out with the tool. If I needed to be more clear, (?) I could have said, "96 through 97 850 series, and 1998 S/V 70 series".

I figured we all knew what I was talking about, sorry. Seemed clear enough to me.
