Well, met up with NEU and S70turbo1998 saturday morning to head to delaware. We roll out from umbc and as we merge onto 95, I get on it and all of a sudden a cloud of greyish white smoke shoots out in every which direction. We pull over and it eventually stops smoking. NEU suggests that it could possibly be the turbochager that is gone but I didnt think so because I only have 60,000 miles on the car even though it is a 98. So I turn back home and finally got the car in this morning. Turns out the turbocharger is actually gone. Persoanlly I thought it was kind of strange for the turbo to be shot with the relativley low mileage on my car. I take the care in for regular maitnence, even with gas prices still always fill up with premium, and check my fluids, etc. I dont drive that aggressive either, and half the time I dont even drive it because I am at school. I bought the car in 2006 with 39,000 on it. Im not sure about the driving habits or maitnence records from the previous owner but when I orignally got it inspected and checked out, the shop said everything was great and perfect working order.

So I get a call from my dad earlier, and he tells me that the guy at volvo said the root of the problem is basically age and not using 100% synthetic oil. I would think that age wouldnt be a problem because the actuallty engine and parts have only been ran 60k. Also he says that after the turbo is replaced, there will still be minor oil leakage from the car? Does all this seem normal. I know a little bit about turbochargers but not enough to warrent a solid opinion.

Any one that can help me out, if you think the guy at volvo pretty much got the reason for the turbo going bye bye right, or if you might have something else to throw out there that I havent thought of.

Thanks Brian

I smell something fishy ;) There should be no oil leaking from your turbo at all.

Mine has 120,000 and theres not a drip from it . And running syenthic ? wait that means the oil that volvo put in it was bad for the car ?

Shoot the S70T5 I had with 170,000 had the oringal turbo and that runs perfect.

I could be wrong, but I have never heard of a turbo just going bad for no reason. Was an oil/coolant line leaking? Clogged? etc?

I would call and ask them how the turbo went bad.

How much do they want to charge you for the repairs?

It is normal for there to be a thin film of oil on the bottom of the turbo.

yeah but not enought to be dripping out or falling on the ground.

It also sounds like what to adam is leading to there is either a blockage on the oil supply or coolant supply line since they just dont "Die"

I know right, I thought that sounded kind of sketchy when I have never heard of exclusivley using synthetic in my car in the first place. I think my dad might have even mentioned that they said they would put semi-synthetic after its fixed. so wtf?

The turbo definitely didnt just die! that would be one of the first times ive ever heard of something like that.

Are you taking the car to the dealer? if so thats a extremely bad idea in the first place!

If you need to replace the turbo do it yourself, its cheap and easy! spend that 1,500 on something else.

unfortunatley I did take it to a dealer, and if I could do it myself I would but I just dont have the time or knowledge to do it. I am going to run over to the dealership tomorrow morning to talk with the service guy to see if he can give a bit more of a concrete anwser on the issue.

How much do you owe them SO FAR? If it's not much, get that thing outta there ASAP! Tow it out, buy a new turbo on fleabay (I've seen a couple of factory rebuilt 16t's coming out of Japan for around $500) and have some of yer MD bros help you with the install. All dealers know how to do on older Volvo's is F em up and then overcharge you for it ;)

my turbo died at 90k

it cost me $1600 bucks and i still dont know what happend...

2001 s60 2.4t

different turbo. Sorry but you got screwed!

Anyway, take that car far far away! Get someone on here or a Volvo Indy to look at it. I bet it's something simple. Make time to work on it! Is a days work worth a grand? I don't think anyone on here makes that in a day.

Brian

Check out HAV (Honda Acura Volvo) Auto. The place is littered with Volvos, which they specialize in. Guy's name is Art, drives a clean ass red 850. He has done any work I've needed on my car and is a stand up guy. Really knows his shit. He is in Catonsville and his number is 410-455.9100. Tell him Danny with the white T5 referred you.

if you HAVE to take it to the dealer, at least buy the part first from another source, and have them put it on for you, if they allow for that. volvo charges wayyyyyyyyyyy too much to replace things like this. like the ABS module.... close to 900!! they're out of their minds
