K&n Oil Filter Review

Recommended Posts

Never used one. I guess my question would be, why would I want to use one?

They would last 10K miles, have great flow(unknown numbers), and filter down to 8 microns which I believe they are stating absolute efficiency.

In my position I would run one of these filters along with Amsoil so that I would be set for a 10K OCI. As it is now, I change my filters out every 3-4K miles.

I normal driving no oil is going to make it 10k so a 10k filter seems eTarded to me.

how is Amsoil claiming such high OCIs then on both filters and oil? If 10K is to much then whats a good figure then. Also are there any oil analysis sheets from a 10K mile interval at say Bob the oil guy forum?

BTOG is a retarded ass forum. It was awesome when it first started but now its a joke. And 10k is meant in fleet vehicles. On our over the road vehicles we go 30k oil changes and many do 50k. But in a DD 3k or 8 months is about where you should be

So your saying in my DD S60 I should be considering 3K OCIs even with fully synthetic Amsoil?

What's the reasoning about this, I'm very interested in what you have to say, because I'm just going by what ive read over the years.

Side note: what do you mean by over the road vehicles we go 30K-50K?

I have run oil assays on every oil I use in several vehicles. Everything from 8L trucks to V8 bmws. I also destructive test filter elements. From a performance stand point most oils are breaking down around 3k miles. From a maintainability stand point they can usually go 5k. BTW Amsoil is not full syn. As for over the road think trucks.

They state it as fully synthetic. So what is a fully synthetic oil? because I paid about 9.30 for each quart of Amsoil which is kinda crazy!

If 3-5K is a change interval then I'm not going with a quality synthetic then, wouldnt be worth it at all.

The biggest thing about syn is increased protection not increased drain interval. Modern oils have addative packs and really do not break down like oils from 20 years ago. What does them in is oxidation and contamination. If you have a regualr stock volvo you are best off with the plane jane mobile one like the dealer suggests.

Then what is with people saying 8K-10K with a extended drain full synthetic? I mean what would happen if I drove for 10K miles on this change with filter changes every 3k?

I'm now just really confused to what to think now.

chuck- do you have a different website with all this collective performance and test information youve done on all these different vehicles? you seem to have dabbled in everything and ive love to learn some of the things you know.

Its scattered across the site mixed in with the octane booster reviews, flow data and other stuff.

 Interesting review and thread.

So, have you done any testing on oil filtered with the 20 um catches to see if there are any ~10 um contaminants? (Are 10 um contaminants anything to worry about?)

And what does this extra flow translate into? Power? Economy? Both? Regardless, seems like $12 over $8 for the Mann is worth it every 3,000 miles...

I remembered having read this article a while ago. Seems to say that the Amsoil synthetic is good for at least 8k miles(?) And, if you change your filter every 3k/4k, you'd be putting a bit of new oil in, right? That would help out... Any thoughts on the matter?

BTW, I have never changed my oil myself. My dad just could never justify it as it's so cheap to get the oil changed and, when you do it yourself, you have to find something to do with the old oil... But, we'll see. I might start doing my own once I have a nicer car I care about more (and my own house/garage once I graduate from school). Although, I guess you could just bring your own oil/filter for the guys at the shop to replace yours with? Any idea how much they would charge for that? (I mean, it's only usually like $20~$30 for the whole job including filter and oil...)

So, I guess what I wanted to ask is: when you take off the old filter, does the oil start running out of the bottom of the engine? How does that work? I'm trying to figure out the logistics of replacing a filter, but not all of the oil...

only a little comes out <1 quart. The oil isnt flowing so it wont all flow out.

Most shops will charge ~20 if they will do it, most like to sell you a certain oil that they carrry in bulk. Chuck whats you're feeling one Valvoline full synthetic?

I dont get the whole change the filter every 3k and oil every 6 or 9 k doesn't make sense to me if you've already gotten the car up in the air and are under it why not unscrew one plug and put in fresh oil? For me its not that it saves me money doing the oil myself but there are very few people i would trust to do it right. I've only had my dad/brother and a co worker change it for me. The reason my dad and brother did it was because my brother wanted to learn and I needed an oil change. My co worker did it the other time because I didn't feel like changing the oil on jack stands at home when he could change it on a lift at work. Btw we weren't allowed to work on our own cars so I worked on his and he worked on mine.

My oil changes run me about 60-70 and that doing it myself. You can take the oil to pretty much anyplace that will use it for heating. Thats atleast what the shop that I worked at did and I still take my oil there for him to use for the winter. As for changing out the filters, you might loose 1/4 of a quart. It all doesnt drain out. I do it in my driveway without a jack or anything in like 2 mins.
