gutbusterman
Hi everybody, I am a noob when it comes to posting, even though I have visited this site and read many posts relating to subjects and topics I am interested in. My latest adventure is I purchased a 96 850R wagon that is a little beat up. I replaced the head gasket for smoking problems (valve seals mostly), and brought it up to stage 0. The problem that I am having since before the head gasket as well, is it doesn't seem to boost. The turbo shaft is tight, not smoking or leaking and I checked the vac hoses many times thinking I might see a problem, but all is good. I hear the turbo spool a little from a stop, but the guage holds at the white/black line(essentially atmosphere-no boost) at any kind of load and the car feels like a brick(pun intended). I know what an R car should feel like and this is not it. There is no hissing, all the turbo hoses are good. Plugged exhaust? MAF sensor? What do you guys know about the valve/controller that connects the vac lines to the wastegate/sensor that is located up by the air box?Could this be a problem? Any help would be appreciated. Hoosier Daddy
there was a thread about the wastegate lever coming up from the body of the turbo and this prevents it from being able to make boost. it happened to mine and the only solution is to tap it down with a hammer so that the wastegate can seal again. you can see the gap if you look. gutbusterman
Wastegate lever, eh? I will have to check that out. I did pull the pipe off a little bit so I could get my fingers in there and check the wategate flap and the turbo shaft, but that really didn't tell me much. I will look and see how that lever is looking. Thanks.
KlausC
Don't forget the vacuum line inside the car that goes to the boost gauge. There is a connector near the hood release lever and if the instrument panel had ever been removed, the line may not have been plugged in at the gauge. At idle, the gauge needle should be on the green side, not at the top.

The gauge does work and I believe it to be fairly accurate, but I am not worried about the gauge so much as the lack of performance. This is my third 850 turbo, but my first R, and I know for sure it isn't boosting. so far I have spent alot of time on this site searching the forums looking for answers and have alot of things to check over. Judging by the initial condition of the car, I am definitely going to check the condition of the wastegate and the blow-off valve (CBV?) on the turbo.
