Quirky Radiator Fan, 1995 Volvo 850 Glt 140k

Posted on another forum but it seems to not let me post now, so I'm trying this one...

Pulled in to the garage today, A/C was clicking on and off, thought it was low on 134a. I popped the hood and started adding some and noticed the cooling fan wasn't on, and the compressor just went silent. I hopped in the car, noticed hot air coming out of the vents, and the engine temp pegged at the top.

The T-stat was replace about 6 months ago, and there''s new coolant in the system (<2 months old).

---Update---

OK let the car sit, started it up, a/c on, fan comes on just fine. Go around the block, park in the garage, and fan is on. Stop the car, turn it back on, a/c on, fan not on, compressor starts clicking on and off again.

I go through this a few times, drive to Lowes in my other car and make my own jumper.

Back at home, I jumped the relay with the positive, keeping the negative plugged into the harness with the car off and on (both situations). Fan works great while jumped.

Turn the car on, plug the relay in, fan comes on, drive around the block come back and the fan isn't on anymore. I jump it and it doesn't turn on. WTF?!? I mess around with the ground and it suddenly works while the positive is jumped. Undo the jump, fan turns off, OK makes sense. Plug the positive back into the relay and the fan turns on.

So I'm thinking maybe bad ground? That seems too easy.

Go home, eat dinner, come back out, fan comes on, drive around the block, come back, fan still on. Works fine now.

WTF?!?!?!

Grr.

I had intermittent fan problems as well. In my case if I tapped the relay with a screwdriver handle, the fan would start. So, I bought a new relay, problem solved.
