R wagon
idk if this is normal or not but I have a tick coming from my engine. I believe the 5 cylinders make this noise but this seems to be louder. What might this be? Thanks guys.Ben
KlausC
We need more input! Is this "tick" loud or soft? Engine cold or hot? Hood open or windows rolled up with the radio on?
R wagon
Well when I first start the car (98 C70) its pretty loud but then as the engine warms it seems to quiet down a little. I know my 850 had this "tick" but it wasnt as loud as this one.
KlausC
More than likely it is your hydraulic lifters starved of oil. If it only last a minute or two, your car will live. Just don't race the engine until it is gone.I have found this happens on cars that used only dino oil and didn't change their oil filters soon enough. And some engines just don't like 20W50 oil. Switch to 10W30 synthetic and use only OEM or Mann filters. Never go to someone who does not use these filters.
R wagon
You are probably right about the hydrolic lifters. I actually just switched to 10W-30 synthetic from regular oil and have not driven the car since but have ran the engine.

BlackBrick
Both my 850s ticked a tiny bit when I first bought them used (w/ 75K miles)After a good cleaning with AutoRX, and then switching to synthetic, by 6 months the ticks went away.Just have to get the previous owner's neglect (using dino oil and not changing enough) out of the engine! 7 VII 7
could be a purge valve, which is normal
Madman55
I also had the same ticking noise. It was the hydraulic lifters not having oil
