jb242gt
Quick and dirty:Car ran fine, 5 min stop and will not start. No crank, no starter solenoid click, nothing. Jumping did nothing. Long story:I was driving my wife's 2000 XC this afternoon.. running fine. Stopped for gas. Hopped back in - hit the key and nothing.... hit it again, nothing. No cranking. No starter click. Full lights on dash. I figure the battery drained for some reason and luckily a good man dropped in with cables. (of course it's my wifes car, so no tools, no cables, no nothing but good running air...) Hooked up the cables and nothing. I figured the starter solenoid was stuck so we smacked away at it while striking the key and nothing... We cleaned the batt terminals and nothing... I can hear the ETM registering and fuel pump priming. The strange part is the dash lights drop to nothing when I hit the key. Somewhat indicating the battery is toast, but this was happening with cables attached. I pulled both batt cables and connected them to reset the system (not sure what this does, but I've heard it works...)Luckily I got a rental to pick me and my daughter up so I could get my wife from the airport. On the way back we stopped by to try it againg and nothing. The car is sitting about an hour away from home. I am heading over there tomorrow morning with a scanner, new battery, starter solenoid, proper tools, and voltmeter. If all else fails I am going to hard wire strike the starter and try not to toast myself.Do you guys have any idea? My car is a '00 GLT so I can grab any spare parts (save for the starter..) to get her's home. Let me know if I need anything more... vegasjetskier
My first guess would be that the battery is dead and the jumpers didn't have a good connection, were bad, or were not connected long enough to put anything into your battery. PyROTech
i would assume that it isnt the battery if nothing happens and you attempted a jump (when you put it on the chassis, is it painted where you put it?). a bit out of left field but the position is off? Rascal2pt0
Don't completely rule out the starter, try bridging the terminals (carefully) if it spins it isn't locked up and is working fine, although the arm may still be toast. Its not uncommon for a starter to be dead and the car otherwise to be fine, you only use it for a few seconds each time you start.

The space in there is real tight and the view is mostly obstructed by the intake. I wish I still had by 242gt that beast was so easy to repair on the side of the road.... Those were the days...Thanks
Ihatespeedbumps
Have you tried to whack the starter to see if it's stuck? I usually do this by using a long pry bar and a hammer. Put the pry bar on the starter and what the end of the pry bar with the hammer. It may free it up and allow the engine to start

jb242gt
fuel pump relay, another poss.read how to bridge to contactsTurns out it was a toasted battery. I got over there with all the tools need to do almost anything and it was just the batt. Looking back I should have checked the jump cable connections on the other guys car. Just wasn't thinking straight... I believe Vegasjetskier and PyroTech get the prize!!Interstingly I found out the junk batt was also the wrong type for the car. It still baffles me that the battery can go junk in the middle of a road trip. I am going to go thru the rest of the charge system to see if anything is suspect. Key lesson: Never leave home in an old car without a proper tool kit. Thanks for the help.
