mbsl98 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Share Posted August 21, 2008 Last night I had a new issue crop up, not noticed until just after I had washed the 855T (just turned 120k), although I don't think the washing has any part in it. It is a rythmic thumping sound from left front, clearly tied to wheel/axle rotation speed. I haven't had a chance to jack it up yet, but looking for a first sense of likely culprit. It seems to me that it must be either the CV joint or wheel bearing. Not particularly impacted by change of direction, and not anything like a clicking that you get from a CV joint. It is most apparent while coasting or light throttle, and seems to disappear as more throttle is applied, even gently. There is some feeling of roughness as well - not just the thumping noise, but a little feel of thumping too. Not tied to transmission gear - same even if shift to another gear manually. One other possibility is something to do with that tire, which I'll check tonight when I can jack it up, but I think it is more mechanical. Does this suggest anything particular to anyone? I origionally thought I had bent a wheel, but upon examination of the front left, it turned out to be the bearing was f'ked right up, the previous owner tried to replace himself, obviously not succeding. So check the wheel bearing, mine was not affected by turning very much, just speed, like yours, more so at low speeds, low throttle, hard to hear at higher speeds (wind also a factor). So check the wheel bearing, mine was not affected by turning very much, just speed, like yours, more so at low speeds, low throttle, hard to hear at higher speeds (wind also a factor).I had the same problem on my 98 S70... same rythmic thumping at speed... purchased the hub bearing at IPD and did the job with a friend.Fairly easy job just the cv axle splines was rusted within the hub bearing so it push a pain to push out.
