Volvo Virgin
Posted up a couple weeks ago about adjustment on the emergency brake. Chuck was good enough to clue me in on the adjustment from the center console. Finally got to that today, but it still won't stop the car or even hold it from a dead stop just putting the car in gear with no throttle. I can hear the e-brake dragging when it's on, but that's all the action I get.So on to plan b(not Grant ). I'm sure I can figure it out when I pull it apart, but figured a heads up before heading in wouldn't hurt. Any thoughts on what I'm likely to find as the culprit or what to look out for? Thanks,Rob

I know mine were intact when I did the rear brakes last time about 1.5 years ago and cut the rotors. Tough for me to believe the e-brake shoes wore out when you only use the freakin thing after you stop. I do use it regularly tho as my driveway is on a hill, and it was just getting weaker and weaker to the point where it didn't work at all.Any other thoughts?? Roll the rotor over so the 1/4"hole is about noon and use the adjuster wheel to tighten the shoes up to the drum. Once this adjustment is done, then use the cable adjustment for the rest. mbsl98
When you get into the rear mechanics, be sure to check that the e-brake cables on both sides are not frozen inside their plastic covers. There are two separate cables that run from the center console under the back floor rug to the outside, and then in a curve back to the rear wheels. The covers frequently crack, letting moisture get into the metal interior and rust the cable. The end result can be either a very hard to move cable, or a cable that doesn't move at all. The interior handle will go up and down, but nothing happens at the other end of cable. Just have someone move the handle up and down while you watch and feel the action back at teh brake end.Note that the Volvo e-brake will not stop the car at the best of times. It is designed solely to hold it stationary once stopped. It does this very well, but will just barely slow teh car from speed.
