i've been thinking and i decided i want to replace my speakers and everything. first paycheck tomorrow and i decided that's what i'm gonna blow it on. so i am wanting to know:

-where's the best place to get the products and get it all installed?

-what kind of job/quality am i looking at for ~$400.

i basically want new speakers and maybe a new headunit. what do you guys have to say as far as any of this goes?

Do it yourself. Stretch those bucks farther!

i can predict at least a half-dozen new threads will pop up made by khax...what they will be about god only knows

but in actuality its probably best if you do it yourself...once you get to college you will wish you saved a couple of buxs here or there...plenty of people have done speakers and HU's so there has to be some good write ups somewhere

Hey, you've gotta learn somehow. And it helps to have people here willing to offer assistance!

If it's as easy for the S70 as it is for the 850, it's really not hard at all. Speakers are a snap and headunit is pretty easy. All you really need is a wiring harness. It'll tell you how to connect all of the wires up from your new H/U and then you just plug it into your car!

Few things of note (that I can think of at the moment):

  • Solder the wires for the wiring harness and heat-shrink them to make sure nothing shorts.
  • Find some good connectors for the speakers. I used some crappy ones from Walmart and was very sorry. Just replaced with some Anderson Powerpoles (which are tried-and-true in the R/C world) and it's much better.
  • Find a H/U which won't skip your CDs all the time. Mine does and it's a PITA. (But, I have just stopped using CDs in it and basically just play music from my iPhone, as it has AUX in, which is half the reason I bought it. [Other half was looks ;)])
  • Be careful of speaker impedances. (I'm sure more on this later.)How many speakers have you got in your car?

Worst that'll happen is you'll blow a few fuses or wreck your ECC because you didn't just ground your stupid H/U to the grounding wire on the wiring harness... (Don't ask me how I Know about that... <_< )

But yeah. Give it a shot yourself, first!

ughh, i knew you guys would say that. truth is, i'm not going to do it myself. i'm sure i could maybe figure it out after many days of frustration but i kind of just wanna get it done right and be done with it. it took me like an hour to install my corners, wiring is my worst nightmare. if i had any previous knowledge or anyone in my family who knew how to do anything remotely like this i would give it a shot but i'd rather pay more to have peace of mind with the whole thing.

the dfference in the system you'll get will be big. figure if you spend $150 on front components, 150 on a hu and 100 on the rears, you can get some nice polks and a pioneer HU with good power and never skips (never had a problem).

subtract $100 from that for install fees (or more) and you'll be getting something not much better than stock.

save the $$, do some shopping. Wait an extra week, get an extra $200. spend $200 on the front components, $250 on the HU, $150 on the rears. You'll have the system for a while, get good stuff. You arent going to be pounding out Bass with that system yet, but when you spend the $300 on a sub next month...

Find someone here who'll help you. I can install speakers and a new HU in under an hour, (sorry... wrong coast) I'm sure I'm not the only one.

not really looking to buy it all at once if i don't have the money to do what i want. ideally i would but if i don't then i don't, i'm not gonna buy a shitty system. anyhow, my speakers are kinda crackly and don't handle bass hardly at all, i mean, they're 10 year old speakers so it's to be expected but i want something better. ever since i got some nice headphones and my shure earbuds these speakers sound so horrible, lol.

if you buy a new headunit from crutchfield.com they will send you an installation kit for free (i.e. a harness to plug into your car and a pocket to fill the empty space of a single din HU in our cars)

for a brand new quality headunit i'd say crutchfield is the best deal. my very nice alpine with ipod plug and play controls was $300 but you can get one with most of the same features for $200.

installing a HU in our cars only requires the ability to see the different color wires and the ability to squeeze when you splice them together.

speakers are easy too but in my opinion the stock speakers are pretty decent when they are working right. you probably want some subwoofers in teh trunk for teh deep bass.

all you need to replace speakers is a screw driver and the patience to not brake plastic tabs.

that's asking a lot here....

good instinct to have someone else do it. I'd start with a good HU, it's the foundation of your system. And your speakers aren't really as bad as you think they are, so wait to do them until later. There are much better ways to spend that money, If it were me, I'd buy a new HU and call it a day unless you can find nice speakers in a junkyard or something.

Put the ATM card down chief. You sound like you're about to blow some money in a hurry, get ahead of yourself and a year from now wish you could do it all over again.

Take the time, do it right.

Thats all I have to contribute to a thread I didn't read

That probably just enough be enough money to get a decent headunit and one mediochre set of speakers installed. Find a freind who can help you and do it together so you can save some money or get a better system with the $$ you have

nah, my front driver side got some water in it i think and a couple others are messed up. i don't mind a working stock speaker but mine are messed up.

i kind of misworded myself. i'm not just going to get my paycheck and run straight to circuit city and buy whatever i can with the amount i have. i'm pretty good with money, i have money saved and stuff, i just want to buy something nice with my first paycheck. that doesn't necessarily mean i won't save more if what i want is more than what i get.

Well, I think one thing that needs to be covered first is what are you looking for in your system?

1) A system that goes "thump" in the night

2) Well rounded / average

3) Audiophile

4) one that gets you by - marginally better then a properly functioning stock system.

Personally, I'm in the midst of getting ready/saving to build an audiophile system in my 850, and for example, my slated component speakers are $1,200 ALONE; that's ONE part of the system.. (aka, front door speakers, dash speakers, and tweeters - that leaves the rear doors, back deck, HU, cables, equalizer, and amplifiers.).

First, decide your plans for the system, THEN decide how to budget it.

That's my advice, have fun. :D
