2002 S60 Message: Transmission Service Required

Recommended Posts

My sister just called me saying she got to work and about a block from the parking lot, her 2002 S60 popped up a message saying "Transmission Service Required" and feels like it's in limp mode (pressing the gas causes it to speed up slowly).

Dead tranny?

//edit: just read around, need to read codes but it can be anything.. from a small thing to a large thing.

common.. there are a lot of tranny problems from '00-'02.

we usually just try to flush the whole ATF.. but if the tranny is badly damaged, time to open.

Yeah, I know. I just didn't expect it to die at 98k ;)

The tranny is fine, according to a dealer test. They said they just loaded on the newest software and hope it will fix many issues. It's still a stupid design where it goes into neutral when you're at a standstill.

OMG, get rid of it now!!!! if the dealer thinks a simple software update will fix it go to another dealership.

I am sure he ment the car ;)

Yea that car has been a boat load of problems. Mostly electrical issues (bulbs burning out too often, anti-trap issues, etc). But it runs pretty well! It had a pressure sensor failure, but that was a $50 part and took 10 seconds to replace.

if they upgraded software and it worked you might be in luck, if the transmission wasnt working what would software do? You got MS WORD but no PC

Heard that but I guess Autos are very troubly

I have 2001 M and in a year changed one bulb ;)

So far owning a 2001 S60T5M has been nothing but pleasure (knock on wood 3 times ) (although coil pack #4 just went out )

Here is a list of low cost maintenance items on P2 AW55 5 speed geartronic trannys. I've done all these and my tranny is holding up pretty well (01 T5 at 110k mi, 01 XC70 at 75k mi)

http://www.freewebs.com/howardsvolvos/driveline.htm

Do all these and change ATF every 30-50k miles if you want to avoid the $4000 transmission replacement bill :)

I say flush the trans, clear codes then see where your at. If it still fails, you at least made an attempt, then consider unloading? The P2 cars are so damn fussy and sometimes experience over takes youth and printed procedures. What does the fluid look like at 90k??? Was it even checked....Volvo states no service interval for trans fluid change and this is a mistake. The cars I have serviced (many since new) are still rolling 6 digit numbers on the clock under my recommendations. Software can never fix the basic mechanical systems that have been tried and true for 50+ yrs!! Basics are sooooo often overlooked anymore.

Just my thoughts

;)

yes, but also the dealer, it just pisses me off when they just tell people its just a software issue.

i work at a dealer and most likely it could have been a software issue. the software you have with neutral mode is very old, volvo came out with software to remove that which when doing software resets your adaptation. check your tranny fluid volvo uses synthetic tranny fluid check if it isnt discolored or the fluid has a burnt smell or has any metal shavings in it. then update the software and drive it see how it is
