E39 M5, E46 M3, 200sx, Evo, Impreza And A Riced Out Civic

I got invited through a Belgian forum to meet up with a bunch of people late last night on an empty stretch of road not too far from here. Basically a highway looking road with the occasional traffic light but completely abandoned since it was effectively a dead end at the moment because of road works. There were guardrails on both sides and no other traffic. I generally frown upon these kind of races but it seemed like a fairly reasonable bunch of people. In fact most of them were in their 30s or 40s, not a bunch of kids.

About 20 cars showed up, among them some really interesting ones like an E46 M3 SMG that was widely advertised as a factory freak. He brought a buddy with an E39 M5 that had a chip and really loud exhaust. There was also a "400 HP" EVO in racing colours, a 375HP nissan Sylvia with a completely new built engine, a scoobie with just chip and exhaust and a whole lot of civics and other less interesting cars.

I first got asked by a guy in a riced out civic which was said to be quick (for an NA civic). I didn't know it was his car and I semi insulted him accidentally by wondering if I should waste the fuel on it. So to make up for that I agreed as a warm-up. The little civic sounded like an F1 car with 4 cylinders, quite funny. It was definitely nimble and quick at very low speeds but after that it was the expected walkover with 10+ carlengths at 140mph.

Next up was a '99 scoobie with chip and exhaust, but we got followed out by the EVO that was supposed to have 400 HP. Well it had all the goodies including a big turbo so I didn't think i could do much against that one. The subaru was a lot slower than expected but the EVO came up on us so I moved over to let him have a go. We went from 60mph in 3rd gear and I actually pulled about a carlength on him until I completely missed the 3-4 shift. I let off shortly after because there was a traffic light coming up ahead (abandoned, but with red light cameras which may still have been working lol). He rolled down his window and asked if I wanted to launch or do a pull from second gear 40mph. Well that wasn't a hard choice to make. We hit it in second gear and we were completely dead equal until I was halfway through my 3rd gear when I started edging ahead. In 4th gear I pulled more than a carlength on him and I let off at 7k rpm in 4th which I guess is about 145. He didn't want a rerun after that so we slowly drove back to the parking lot. He didn't have much to say afterwards but I guess he'll be going back to his tuner very soon. I had a passenger in my car who wanted to film the whole ordeal so I guess I may post the video of it later when I get it. If you can see anything on it.

The guy in the M3 had been really eager to "race" me ever since he got there so that was next. His buddy in the E39 went with us as well and I think the EVO also followed us again. The M3 was a little slower than the EVO had been, but by no means was it a real walkover. I pulled about 2-3 cars on him to 140. Then we again got a red light and he wanted to do a launch. While we were sitting at the light the EVO turned into a bit of a nutter as he took the exit on the right, took the green light on the road that intersected ours and pulled a huge 4-wheel powerslide in the turn. tsk tsk tsk.

As the light went green the E46 immediately jumped in front, I was about half a car behind his rear bumper when I shifted to 2nd gear. But I quickly gained on him and passed him fairly easily even before 3rd gear was done. We kept on it a little longer to about 150mph and he was 2 cars behind at that point, not really losing more ground. Aerodynamics don't favour a Volvo I suppose. But I was impressed that even from a dead stop it didn't take long at all to overhaul the M3.

The E39 was more difficult. The first try in 2nd gear I completely missed the start and could only tuck in behind him. The second time things went as they should and we were basically alongside all the time, he was at my rear bumper by the end of 4th gear but I think he would have come back going into 5th at least until he hit his governor at 155. Still not a bad result by any means I thought. My car has trouble getting the boost back quickly after shifting :( A ball bearing turbo would really help there.

The last car was the very quick looking/sounding Nissan. He had been dyno'd at 375 with his current boost level, but he intended to run higher boost with a retune in a few months. The aerodynamics were wat scared me most. We went out but after half a race his IC hose popped off. Later when it was fixed he did a test run with the M3 driver as a passenger and the latter was really enthusiastic about what an insane monster it now was. He was running 22 psi on the 2L engine.

We did 2 runs and it was basically a dead heat. Neither of us ever got ahead more than half a car and even when we let off both times the difference was within 1 metre. I was surprised he didn't start to pull on me at high speeds, the Volvo did well. Almost got my front splitter roasted by the huge flames out of the Nissan though.

I headed home after that, but the reactions from everyone there were all extremely nice, they loved the unnaturally quick Volvo  Only the EVO dude seemed dissapointed but that was understandable, if you have a 400HP dyno printout from your tuner you don't expect to lose to cars with 40 or 50 less.

I don't think I'm going to repeat attending such an event, but it was definitely nice to compare to cars you rarely meet otherwise. I forgot to mention a white Golf GTI with a chip, but that one also couldn't really hold a candle to the 850.

It has been so long, and I rarely keep track any more, but what do you have done to the car? Like turbo, engine work, etc.

Unfortunately you will find haters all the time. There is this guy rollin around here in a JETTA GLI has BBS LM's porsche brakes, and is slammed. I get up next to him at a light and I see his car I'm just like wow it looks really good. So I try to get his attention and he will NOT even look at me.

All the while thinking to myself... dude I don't wanna race you. I just wanna give some props on a job well done. For some reason people get kind of an attitude for no reason. Compliments are always very nice :)

No engine work. Turbonetics T3/T04E-50 stg3 .48AR. 420cc injectors (maxed out) a big IC, 3" exhaust, and a tune that cost a heck of a lot <_<

And the interior consists only of 2 sparco seats

Wow... that is impressive. I seem to recall from before you weren't running an upgraded internal engine.

Who did the tune? Rica?

It's an MTE tune. It was tuned on the road by crazy Swedes. It was good the first time but took 2 more sessions to get it where it is now.

Ahhhhh nice! See I got a RICA basemap from John Ross... He came out to road tune ad his shit wasn't straight. SOOOOOO I still have a RICA basemap (almost 2 years later. No fun :-(

  • 2 weeks later...

Video's.... you need the xvid/divx codec, google it if it doesn't work for you.

The M3 coupe vs the EVO (i had to wait until i saw them take off until i could floor it hence the slow looking start)

http://www.greenringer.net/video/M3vsEVO1.avi

http://www.greenringer.net/video/M3vsEVO.avi second run with nice flames from the Mitsu!

Me against the EVO. Once or twice I had to lift and get back on it because of a boost spike after shifting.

http://www.greenringer.net/video/850vsEVO.avi

The EVO was boosting 1.9 bar dropping to 1.7 bar (=24psi)

I heard the M3 ran a 12.9 1/4 mile earlier this year, not bad :)

Oh man, your videos just made my morning!!! I love that raised limiter in 4th, that gear just goes on forever, and so does 3rd. Man, you have me wanting a 850/S70 T5M and modding it all over again really badly.

On that 850 vs EVO video I kept saying "reel the m3 in, you got him, cmon reel him in"... then when you passed him i was so happy... ah man, good stuff.
