turbowagoneer855
hello everyone, t-bricker here !I've finally got possession of a replacement for my seized motor in my recently purchesed '96 855 . According to the ad in car-part.com, the new arrival in the garage has only 44K miles and it came out of an '95.My Stage0 plan calls for replacing all oil seals, tb, and so on. Basically, I'm plannning for replacing all that can be replced while the motor is out of the engine bay and the transaxle separated from the block. Also, a "tic" kit and a new oil pump kit will be installed. Do I need to consider also a new hydraulic tensioner fior tb??Btw: before continuing, this is my first time doing any major work on a white block, but got some experience on red ones(no hotrodding, maintenance&rebuilding only )What else would I need to worry as far as prep work on this engine, if I'm planning for keeping the stock turbo with increasing the boosst to 15psi, a 2.5" exhaust, a viva or ipd ECU flashing, and the RIP kit, for what I call "Stage I", so I can break the 250hp barrier without worries?Should I open it up to replace also the HG, (overheard the 5 bangers are notoriously HG crashers), maybe pooring some oil in the cylinder holes (with the head removed) see if the rings hold (or not), stuff like this.Any input will be greatly appreciated! cheapwagon
(overheard the 5 bangers are notoriously HG crashers)I have heard that the head gasket is solid unless you over heat it.
turbowagoneer855
the reason I picked the 250 number is because this will be a DD and I want to keep the driveability manageable.in other words, just something to woosh me easily through my daily commute :)

EricF
fwiw i uped the boost a bit and blew a HG. and it didnt overheat.Bet you were detonating pretty badly..I've never heard of a head gasket failure from anyone I know personally. I have run 20-25 psi on 3 different big turbos on 3 different 850 engines, and even heard some detonation in one setup. In any case, it's absolutely pointless to take the head off for what you are doing. If anything the torque specs of the head bolts might be a little off as they'll be a tad stretched out after having been used once (or may be stretched beyond spec if the car has had the head off in the past and the bolts were reused).
