Question For The Experts

Ok...I love all Volvos. If it's a recent R you want to talk business about, I dare to say I can hold my own with the best of them. However, if it comes to say a 96 850 R...well...I am out of my league. So here is the deal. Lady owned an 850 R since new and has maintained it well everything being done at the Volvo dealer. Recently, the car overheated. My guess is the engine is toast for sure. It's been sitting at Lehman Volvo in Mechanicsburg for basically the summer. The tires are flat, rotors rusty...you know...a gem. Anyhow, I go and look at the thing because I would actually like to try (with the help of my brother) to work on a project something like this. Mechanically, I just am no good, but I would like to learn. I have never changed oil. Can't flush a tranny or radiator (only thing I've flushed is a toilet).

So now here's the dilemma. I am convinced this is not an R. It doesn't have the R front bumper, the suede, an R anywhere to be found, Volans, or a spoiler. What is this thing? It says TURBO on the back, but not R. Also the wheels, in addition to being really tired looking are just plain FUGLY. I don't know what they are called, but they are 5 spokes and the spokes are kind of rounded (not flat like a peg).

Anyhow, the car looks exhausted. I think with a lot of love and a power buffer and some investment it could be brought back to life. However, if I bother to get wrapped up in this I would like to know what I am getting into. If it's an R...I MIGHT be tempted, if it's not I can see no reason why anyone would bother.

So let's hear from the experts...does a mechanical R exist with common 850 duds essentially?

No we haven't gotten to price yet though I don't think it could be worth much of anything and the wheels on it I just checked swedespeed are called Persus. They didn't look the bad clean with a pumped up tire, but as she sits...ewww.

No R front bumper,R spoiler, no suede seat, missing badges...........probably not an 850R......don't forget they made 850 turbos during the same years. There are, of course, differences in the 850R model that make it unique.

There are few 850R's for sale....but its getting harder to find them........they are true 'gems' now.

Mike, did you check the miles??? Sounds like a plane jane 850t if all of the R bits aren't present. If you need a hand with anything, just give me a call and I can talk your brother through it. I'm confident your bro can work on this because of his Evo. Speaking of which....I got a ride in a NASTY evo, and your explanation was spot on haha. "It's just no fun until 4 grand"

wheels sound like persus and the car sounds like an R if it is an R without every R bit except for the engine why do you want it? R parts can be somewhat hard to find and expensive a set a clean R seats can be upwards of 800 volans around the same price, front and rear spoilers about 800 so right there to make it look like an R it will be 2400 i say find one that atleast has the R bits and fix that one up

Ok well I am going to go out on a limb and say thats an 850 turbo, not an R. Well, I will probably just pass then.
