My other friend had a similar problem and it was the inner and outer tie rods. Probably will be what the dealer diagnoses. If your car has around 150k I almost guarantee it is the rack starting to go bad. I have seen them start to go bad around that mileage. I also read in your first post introducing your car you went with aftermarket axles as well, you may need to use that metal adhesive on splines, even though I dont recommend it. xallenx
HEY DAVIT So I get home from work and decide to take pics of that cross bolt. AND to make sure it's still tight. WELL. It wasn't tight, but snug.SO I removed everything, cleaned up the threads, got my tools and made sure it'd never back out on its own again. This was the reason why I was having suspension rattles over bumps. But this didn't fix my current noise. So double check yours. It may be loose. Wait!!! you can take the top nut and the cross shape nut out without compressing the springs?? I thought you can't do that.
erikv11
Wait!!! you can take the top nut and the cross shape nut out without compressing the springs?? I thought you can't do that.you can always take the top nut off, the cross shape nut holds it together.you shouldn't take the cross nut off with the strut assembly out of the car. the spring will decompress and kill you or take your arm off etc. really.when the strut assembly is in the car, the top of the strut tower (that painted cap, welded onto the body) keeps the spring from decompressing. I suppose if the weld failed you'd lose your face.I would rather not unscrew the cross shape nut with the assembly in the car because on a strut job when you tighten it down for reinstallation, the spring is supposed to be compressed a certain length. Unscrewing it in the car means the weight of the car determines the spring compression (length), not a measurement. That may be just fine but I don't know, would rather not guess. I don't think it's the rack, at least I hope it's not.

turbomoose
It doesn't make the noise at full lock, but at any intermediate position. So it's not the steering stops.Car's been dropped off at the dealer, I doubt they've even looked at it.
mkc70
Thought about replacing your sub frame bushings yet? I've read numerous posts on s80's with an o ring fix for this noise. Perhaps you have a similar issue.

turbomoose
Well my car is ready to be picked up. Finally. And free of charge since it was a warranty issue! That news was a complete shock, but makes me VERY happy. ...They'd better wash my car and make sure it doesn't look like it's been through a sand storm with the windows left down. Going to get it in a few hours. :) :)
