Coolant Flush And Flow

so i have been studying this diagram:

V70_coolantFlow.gif

last time i did a flush, i put a garden hose in the reservoir with the water flowing and had the radiator drain unplugged; ran the car for a few minutes until steaming water started coming out of the radiator.

however, looking at this picture, it seem that the lower hose is the main coolant feed - with the radiator drain unplugged, the majority of the flow from the reservoir would just drain thru the metal pipe on the back of the engine (#7), down thru the lower radiator hose (#13) and out the drain hole.

i'm thinking the best method to flush the entire system during a radiator swap would be to remove the thermostat (#1c), open the up upper radiator hose (#12) for drain and clip the lower radiator hose (#13) so that the fresh water from the reservoir (#10) flows thru #17 to #7 and into the engine.

any thoughts?

So this is specifically for a radiator swap, and not actually as a cleaning procedure? IE you want all the coolant out before you bring it in your garage?

Put a bucket under the lower radiator hose, unclamp it and back it off with a screw driver. Problem solved :P

FYI, theres a drain hole on the back of the block as well. On the backside near pipe number 7.

ya, i'm aware of the drain on the engine block. i have done the simple drain and re-fill before.

this time i'd like to properly get clear water flowing thru the engine without starving it.

so yes, it's for a cleaning procedure; it's because of a leak in the radiator which i have to replace - i have some sort of contamination in the cooling system.
