Grinding From Right Wheel While Sharply Turning To The Left

When I replaced my front brakes I noticed a grinding coming from the right front tire even while going straight.. I brought it back in my garage and took the wheel off, caliper off, and rotor off and put it all back on and the grinding was gone. This sound is the same sound but only now while turning.

Now a few months later, I notice while turning sharply (full travel) to the left, that there is a metallic grinding coming from the right front tire yet again. It's not there while turning to the right. Sounds like like the caliper scraping against the rotor (metal on metal). No idea if it's new or has always been there and I just noticed it today. I took the wheel off 3 times, it's still there. I put the car up on jacks, and turned it on, then rolled the steering wheel all the way to the left with it in Drive. No grinding sound. It seems to just happen with weight on wheels and while turning sharply, almost to the full extent of the steering. It's driving me nuts. It's definitely a metallic metal on metal sound, and definitely coming from the right wheel area.

There are no score marks on the rotor or caliper, I can't find where it's coming from.

Any ideas?

MIJ over on MVS suggested the dust shield and possibly the "turn stops" which I believe (if I am understanding where they are) have plastic shields on them. I felt the plastic, it was cold so it wasn't rubbing there.

I agree with MIJ, I've had that exact same problem before too. easy to fix that's for sure. Pop your wheel off, you will see a piece of sheet metal that stops mud, and crud from spraying up the inside of the wheel all over your caliper, rotor etc. You may simply need to give that a firm push to bend it back out.

Commonly when placing wheels back on people accidently catch on the dust shield and bend it toward the outside of the brake assembly. Let us know what you find.

OK that makes sense I'll whack it back and report :). I'm just hoping I didn't screw up something important, I tend to do that.

OK I bent some metal today and it ended up being the dust shield on the bottom, where it gets real close to the rotor. Fixed! Either me or my mechanic must've caught it while working on the timing belt. My heart can beat again :).

Yeah I let him know, I'm happy it was a quick fix. The downside to finding it and fixing it is I now notice a faint clicking noise coming from both front tires when driven. It happens when the wheels are straight and not just turning. I only noticed it when I put it up on the stands. I'm taking it to get an alignment tomorrow at Volvo, I'm going to ask them about it. Ugh, it never ends with these things huh?? :D Way better than my VW though with 3 years on it and 30k more miles, I'll take the Volvo any day.
