bmx9854
Has anyone attempted to substantailly lighten an x70, i.e. manual window converison, manuals seats. etc.... Is it possible to get out cars to ~3200 lbs (~3600 stock, right?) without ripping the whole interior out?

I had 2 different sets of Sparco seats, and after you put in the base, adapter, and slider they're not going to save you any weight. Our cars aren't that heavy, I would concentrate your efforts somewhere else since you don't want to tear out the whole interior.

MrTopher
lol - see the banner ad...There are a lot of ways you can reduce weight, new seats will save you some, AC is pretty heavy (I wouldn't give it up though), especially if it's not working. The stock exhaust is very heavy, prettymuch anything aftermarket would be lighter. and of course there are lighter wheels.

If you can reduce your unsprung weight it is worth a lot more.
AaronD81
Are you buying lead seats? The seat was actually Carbon/Kevlar and Nomex. Like I said, it's the brackets that weigh a lot. Have you ever seen a slow motion video of a crash test? The seat moves a LOT, you want the bracket to be as strong as possible. You will save some weight, but with the cost of buying the seat and brackets, there are easier and cheaper ways to lose weight. Again, my recommendation is to buy a racing seat for comfort/stability, not weight savings.

You don't need a 20lb frame. In a crash it only needs to hold the weight of the seat, the body weight will mostly go into the seatbelt. Seats are the single biggest weight saving thing you can do, definitely if they are both electric like mine were. Everything after seats is a lot more difficult to lose.
