Xc90 Anti-skid Message

Mom in law just bought a 2007 XC90 3.2, 12k miles, used, 6 yr. warranty for 28k. Killer Deal...but thats beside the point. She has driven the car about 1500 miles and we already have a couple issues. First, the passenger door was rattling, and I diagnosed it as the window switch was loose...easy fix, right? Well Lyle Pearson Boise managed to A) make a 6 inch cut along the top portion of the panel, and B) crack the bottom portion of the panel and make it worse. So they got to buy us a new panel.

Secondly, and most importantly she got an error message within the first 200 miles of owning the car. "Anti-skid service required", "Anti-Skid Temporarily off". It seemed like this would happen randomly when we switch on the car, about 50% of the time. Sometimes shutting off the car and restarting would make the message go away.

We take it back to Lyle on Nov. 11 and they reset the codes and update the software (not to mention replacing the door panel they ruined).

My question is that I have heard horror stories about having to take the XC-90 to the dealer multiple times over the Anti-skid. Two times is too many for me. Below is what they deduced from our first visit...and of course the anti-skid came back on after the 200 mile trip home. What do you think is causing the problem? Yaw sensor? And what is a BCS?

Oh and remember that door panel? They left a screw inside the door and its rolling around when accelerating or braking!!! Argh!

Thanks in advance for the advice. -Tim

What's with some stealerships just being terrible? My dad was telling me that his parents were having problems with their ~2001 S40 (which probably has like 40k miles on it). Apparently it would make this really large "bang" sound whenever they took a left-hand turn quickly. They took it to the stealership like 4 times and they kept saying there was nothing wrong with it. Eventually, my aunt was there visiting (she actually gave them the car which is how I got mine...) and was like, "Look. I am not leaving until you figure out what is wrong with this car." After much roundabout play by the people there, she finally got a manager to go with her to drive the car around. She had him drive it and told him to take a quick turn. The car did the "bang" and the manager had the mechanics look at it again. Turns out all of the motor mounts had rusted through! Nothing was holding the engine in place! At least they got the problem fixed (and at a severe discount on the labor...)

I'm really not sure what the moral of the story is... but I hope you can get those inept jerks to fix it all correctly. Maybe you shouldn't have bothered... My parents bought a Nissan Quest a good while ago (8+ years) and the place they got it from was terrible with service. (They lost the key we left for them in the night deposit after having done the work, so they had to replace all of the locks...) After too much of this B.S. they got the warranty transferred to another dealer. So, maybe you can get something like that somehow for your XC90?

Dumb question, but where is the SAS. Is it in that box with the yaw sensor or in the steering column.

I'd tell her to go somewhere else but the sales guy is solid and usually he can make the service monkeys do their job correctly...he has sold 7 volvos between 2 families. That and the next nearest volvo dealer is 5 hrs. away in salt lake. I just want to make sure I go there with enough ammo to make them solve the problem the first time.

The SAS ( Steering Angle Sensor) is the Contact Reel. It does require S/W. If you have ever had the steering wheel off an 850 it would be the equivalent to the clear plastic ring that always breaks at the 3- 25 torx eyelets when taking the dash out from age. The XC90 uses a 3 stage sensor meaning there are three airbag stages when deployed(gray, green, & purple connectors). This is on the Contact Reel. I say this because it seems you have a dealer that might be a bit on the challenged side :P. Does the XC90 have DSTC? When the car is turned on does it say, "DSTC ON" in the message board? Sometimes the car can get water inside and short the DSTC module under the R/F seat. It's not wrong for them to do a BCM upgrade first. A lot of the cars have minor S/W glitches that the upgrades are very efficient and effective to repair. When codes like this come up, I would hope the tech would take a bit more thought and might want to try configuring the Steering system, to make it a bit more convincing that more thought has taken place in the matter. It's to bad the dealer is so inconveniently far. They don't mean to screw you. Volvo Corp. has Hypocritical standards that aren't customer friendly.

It will say "DSTC Off" after I clear the Anti-skid messages. Thanks for the explanation on SAS.

We've decided to trade vehicles for a week or so, so I can make the multiple trips until its fixed (I live in Boise). Sweet deal for me but I am pretty sure she wasn't expecting to buy a new XC90 only to have to drive my 850 in the snow! I will post here once the problem is finally solved.
