Best Years For A Used V70

Well, it may be time to retire the old girl and upgrade to the newer body style as well as have everything working.

Since there are so many "Know Pro's" on this forum, what are the best years? Definitely looking for a Turbo and will be doing light mods such as exhaust, chip and suspension. I hear the 2001 (first year right?) has the ETM problem but what about the following years? Any help would b greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Basically, it's best to avoid first year cars (2001 P2 V70, 2004 V70R). They're certainly not all bad, but when speaking in generalities, this is the way to go. (Yes, folks will say '04 R's don't belong in the same category as '01 P2s and '99 S80s, and it's true, but there were a few first-year issues, and GTs had the torque-limited 5 speed, whereas '05+ got the 6 speed without torque limiting.) If you want AWD, go '03 and up; if FWD, no real years to avoid. 2005 T5's got the same engine and turbo as the R, so they start off with higher HP/TQ.

ETM effects +99 and is covered by Volvo for 10years or 200k miles.

And any auto trans with 5 speed had teething issues. 2000R and 2001- 2003 had problems too, but that can be fixed with the proper 3309 fluid and software updates and b4 servo cover upgrade. And then your cool...

Are there many problems past the '01 year? I heard there weren't...

Any chance you want to explain this further... Teething, and that 3309 fluid...?

See that?...

I knew you guys knew.

I would've never guessed an 04 v70r had issues. I was looking at one advertised locally and was wondering why the "cheap" price.

I'd also be interested to know about the fluid change and teething issues too. How much do these repairs co$t...or are they quick DIY fixes.

Thanks again! You guys ROCK!

IMO, you should keep the 850 if the mileage is not too high.

2001+ P2s are Aisen Warner 55/50 5 speed automatics (unless you get a manual), they take JWS3309 fluid which is a little harder to get hold of. Toyota Type IV and Mobil 3309 are same identical fluids to Volvo's OEM ($18+/quart at Volvo dealer) at much cheaper prices. I'm no expert on this fluid but I hear the friction index is different from previous fluids.

01 and def 02s have valve body problems (Not about about 03s). To keep the problems at bay, there is a software update, fluid flush, b4 servo cover change (if you vin indicates a bad batch), and lower transmission torque mount. This is all the cheap stuff you can do. All are DIY except software update. Beyond this, fix gets expensive and probably much harder DIY: $1500 for valve body, $4500 for tranny.

Here are all my notes on the tranny issues
