Need Some Help/opinions

Hi all--

We're looking to replace our older 5 series wagon with this: http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=106934

So, essentially this guy at the dealer is SLOOOOW at getting back to you. Maybe that's why they've had it a year almost? Anyhow, give me some feedback here...what should I look out for on this car? I am sure there are a bazillion answers to that question, so just soe ideas would be good. Also, he siad they had it in at their Volvo delaer in Columbus. It needs a wastegate selenoid? Ummm...I have no idea if that even exists. My guess is he is mistaken, but either way it needs something (will find out exact Volvo-speak definition for you soon) to the tune of 1300 dollars. He was like we can get that fixed for you for another thousand...my guess is they won't be that willing to negotiate, but we shall see. I am going to play hardball if I need to...as long as you guys give me the greenlight that it's worth fighting for.

Oh and I did ask since they have had it so long and they have put only about 300 miles on it in that year, but they do drive it around every once in a while just to keep fluids moving and such I assume.

Thanks in advance guys! Hope to add another Volvo to the fleet soon. This would be number 3!

On those years, if you don't need AWD, don't get it. Those AWD system is not as reliable as the Haldex AWD. And you're getting an 8-9 year old car.

Find a T5 FWD and use snows for the winter.

And price not looking that great either.

Haldex is just as bad if not worse .

at least if this type fails you can find used ones for cheap

Wow...I thought this would really light up some converstion. Where are the cheaper ones? Condition and maintenance, as we all know, are important. They did come down on price by so far about a grand without my asking. I am sure I could have one cheaper, but you have to compare apples to apples. This seems nice, the interior looks nice, scuffs seem to be non-existent on the corner of the bumpers and such.

What, then, is this car worth do you think if it's not worth 9? 8? 7?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, NEU for that link. That car, does in fact look very nice. However, it has a few issues and about 30k more miles. It also has many cool upgrades. The matter here becomes that we are trading in my uncle's Jeep for this and therefore, it likely will come from a dealer. So far they have been pretty strong on the trade for the Jeep, so you have to factor that in as well. Essentially, we are doing this because my uncle bought the and now about 8 weeks later hates it. So we traded him our older 5 series BMW wagon for the Jeep on the assumption we could dump it and get something we would enjoy. And who wouldn't enjoy a V70 R?

Mileage shouldn't be an issue, he probably had 105K service which is timing belt, water pump, tensioner (which ain't cheap)... And for a $1k less you get $5k in upgrades, and they are very very nice upgrades! ;) But you did your uncle a big favor unloading that Jeep, well what ever the dealer wants for the '00R give him less!

Hmmm you bring up good points. 30k miles isn't an issue per se, but 30k is 30k. But again we're back to the Jeep. That guy has gotten his papers to go overseas and he won't want to trade as that woulbn't accomplish much for him. I don't know...I am tired of thinking about it though so I am just gonna sleep on it I guess.

But keep your thoughts coming, I appreciate them. Is VS asleep? Seems slow today.

I definitely should have elaborated- As I am sure you know, maintainence records are everything with these cars. A 30K over under car should be on your radar for sure. Put it this way. I wanted a 120K-140K car when I bought mine. I got a 150K car BECAUSE it had all the records which included, but no limited to- new bevel gear/driveshaft/VC, struts, sways, turbo etc....the whole laundry list. At 190K now I am not (knock on wood) having half the problems people with far lesser mileaged cars are having. Sure, I have a few door dings, some small interior scuffs but hey, it's an 8 year old car and I'm on the NE, home of the shitty-est drivers and worst drivers. I got in sub 7k, glad I did because there is always something to do to these cars, they can nickle and dime you to death. If you were talking about a 45Kmile car I'd say jump- but +100K you have to look close and find the best deal. Just my 2cents.

p.s. you really don't want silver.......

Hmmm I see your point about havnig higher mileage cars on your radar, but 30k is not 10k like in your example. That's two and a half years of driving for the "average" person. There are tons of factors that go into too..highway miles versus city driving for instance. I am on this board and thus I know the difference between a car that might be lower mileage and has been let go versus a higher mileage example that has been maintained. So while I agree with you principally, I would prefer to find an example that has been well cared for (and this one seems to have been) but that also has lower mileage. Would this car still be an option at 97k instead of 87k? Of course. But 87k versus 117k is a big difference. I'll let the market speak on that one though.

Still, at the end of the day my plan is to negotiate very very hard and get this for 7ish. And I know these cars can be a handful to keep after, I just hope they aren't that bad. I mean this car is going to be driven no doubt, but I mean how bad is it for maintenance? My 05 S60R has had a long list of issues, but I think I have ironed those out ot where it's good (knock wood of course).

Thank you all...I appreciate the input. S/V70s are just sort of new to me.
