Connecting Rods

Hi there,

Well after thinking about how to build my 97 850, I'm going to want to upgrade the connecting rods. But here lies the problem, I'm not sure what company to go with. My buddy just bought a set of connecting rods from VMS and it took over 4 months to get (poor customer service by the way) and I was told to stay away from the "China" ones, do you guys have a set I should look for??? I'm planning on a 19T upgrade so I want to make sure my engine can handle it.

Thanks

Get the r-sport rods if they are in stock. Do not ever buy anything from VMS. The China rods will work fine. There is another guy on here who can get you China rods, maybe he'll chime in.

i thought R sport stocked China rods?

R Sport are 'China rods.' Good for what 4-500hp? If you want legit, strong rods just contact a major company about making a one off set. I know Crower will do it for ~800, someone had been in contact with Diamond (?)...and there are various other suppliers, others will chime in, although they are expensive...but the better solutions usually are. Depends on your goals...

I thought Diamond was just pistons? I have their pistons.

they do.

there are plenty of companies to choose from there are Eagle, Pauter, and R-stport to name a few.

I spoke with Eagle and they "said" they do not sell our rods, what is the part number? Those are good cheap rods, I would like to grab some.

Pauters are crazy expensive and they only list 4cyl Volvo rods...

R-Sport seems to be the solution for most people though. $500 bones for a set of 5.

i would say cryo your rods you have but i only went to 23psi at 3,000 rpm so they are pretty strong with a 16t not a 19t not sure how much more they can handle this is only if you want to cheap out

+1 on the Cryo solution. IMHO they work just fine, but require a little prep work prior to Cryo treatment. All casting lines (stress risers) need to be removed, and I also recommend shot peening. I'm running an 18T with an IPD stage III mod at 20 psi. I'm into the engine now for around 12,000 miles and no issues. The way I drive, if I was going to bend something I'd done it by now!

Pauter has confirmed that they do have drawings for the B5234T (139.5mm rod length with a 53mm big end bore and 23mm pin diameter). May want to try referencing this part # if you talk to them: VOL-230-530-1394F. Retail was around $225/rod. $1125 for a set of 5 in 4340 C'moly steel. Be prepared to wait 2-3 months for the rods from Pauter.

Also there are always the R Sport International "China" rods that come with ARP 2K rod bolts for $500.
