V70r Lower Valance On An 850

I have the opportunity to get a new front end and I was thinking about doing the x70R swap. I know that Pras has done it, but I my situation is different.

First of all, his WHOLE car was done up. So, the lines on it matched. Shaved handles, door trim delete, and fender flares.

Now when doing his front bumper, the shop cut the bottom half of the R bumper and riveted it in place then they blended the lines. So his front bumper looks like one piece like here:

BUT, I am keeping my trim and it is body matched. I want to keep the separate 2 piece look, but all one color. This will help keep the straight lines in the car. Like he has it here, but painted:

Do I have them rivet it and blend just the rivets? or do I cannabalize my old bumper for the section that clips the bumper to the top piece?

i say keep the trim but leave it black not body matched.

All my body trim is matched already, so I have to. But if my stuff were all original, I would definitely leave it unpainted too.

I just sent an email to my body shop guy and hopefully he'll think its something that won't cost too much to do. I would REALLY like to have this front end so I can get one of those Habrec splitters.

you'll have to do what is pictured in the 2nd picture.

the V70R bumper will not just fit onto the 850 front because the hood sits in there differently, and headlights are different.

your onlly option, without swapping the entire front end, is to have them cut the top of the bumper off, and then rivet it to the upper gray 850 trim.

if the shop is good, they should be able to use polyurethane to cover the rivets, while still maintaining the separating line between the valence and trim.

then, once they paint it, it should be good.

i should point out that at either side of the bumper, it wasn't exactly the right length...ie the valence didn't cover up the entire trim piece on the sides, so there needed to be a little work.

also, the corners of the bumper didn't exactly fit over the trim.....it was stretched a little, hence why I think my lower valence ended up being slightly bowed in the middle at the bottom.

it's not an easy thing to do, but a good body shop should be able to knock it out in no time.

if you want to go to the guy who did mine, message me....he's in North Hollywood....he did most of the body work and he also knows engines, so you can get a manual swap done while you're at it.....and his prices are DAMN good.

dude just swap the whole front end over like i did my 850. its much easier to just bolt up some fresh pieces then it is to cut apart 2 different bumpers and try to put them back together as one. now before you go thinking that im just a lazy prick or before people start telling you that about me it is true i am lazy but im also a bodyman and moldmaker. i wouldnt waste that much time, money or body filler on that kind of job personally but thats just my opinion. besides if the bumper spilicing goes horribly wrong your out an 70R bumper and your 850 bumper.

heres list of what you need from a 70series to pull off the entire swap if you consider doing it.

hood

fenders

brackets for the hood latches. your 850 ones can be modified to work, little bit of cutting and reaming of the original holes.

headlight mounting panel

lights

turn signals and their bulb sockets

bumper reinforcement bar and foam

bumper brackets

Myself and t5jim did my swap over in a few short hours filled with some cursing, laughing, frustration, and innovation. the overall result is actually better than i ever could have hoped for. if anything its a great excuse to get some friends together and have a few beers and tear apart a volvo which is always fun.

Ok thanks. I had no clue that you had to do some work in the corners. I'll tell my guy and see what he thinks. I sent him an email already.... so we'll see.

BTW, I just picked up a rear door from Trius yesterday. Talked to him for a little bit too. Kinda interested in the bolt on he's making for the regular 850

That's a lot of parts to source. Best way would be to find a wrecked car prolly? Maybe next time... I'm not sure if this is gonna end up working... might have to settle for an R bumper with a nice lip.
