This is 99% of the time the need to replace the oil sump o-ring. No vacuum, so impaired oil suction, so less oil getting up to where it needs to be, so ticking lifters. This is a simple thing, but you don't want this condition for long. Plenty of write ups on this. This will age your motor.

Why would you say it will cause damage?
