Jrl Is A Moron V. Elleventybillion

So once a month or so I click past Swedespeed and never post a thing but the sheer idiocy of this just made me post

So the topic is about the highly advanced procedure of tightening the WG actuator arm 1 or 2 turns, with great results for all involved.

JRL also put a knee slapper on the first page about his one-off super agressive tune that makes his car hard to drive when its cold

Figured I wouldn't get into that.

whats funny/ shame jim is actually a pretty nice guy in person.

i've been over his house, hung with him at many meets etc.

he's a different bird for sure, but he's forgot more than most of us will ever know. he gets pissy when the same discussions come up for the elleventybillioth time to him.

just ignore him unless your looking for fun and then get him worked up with grammar and punctuation.

he gives me crap becuase i don't CAP anything + my grill hahaha.

Hate to say it but JRL may be right on this one... Depending on the strength of the spring in the actuator, the exhaust gas pressure may be enough to push the wastegate open a little and bleed some pressure around the turbine causing it to spool slower than it should with a properly chosen wastegate actuator spring. By tightening the WG actuator arm you are in essence increases the value x in the equation F=kx thereby increasing the force exerted by the spring which in turn holds the wastegate closed with more force causing the turbo to spool faster

You said it, exhaust gas pressure. This is definately an issue at higher rpm but most certainly not at 0  , 1000, 1500, etc rpm.

Noticing a vast improvement "even at 1100rpm going from -18 hg to 0 pressure much faster" is complete BS.

I always find that humorous. His 'super-aggressive tune' is less so than what I run with, and I think the car's "alot" of fun in the cold.

Isn't it "Eleventeenbillion," though? ;)

I agree, he has help and saved me time and money with my 5 speed auto. He's the guru of '00R info, he really knows his stuff, but he is a prick at times... I've met him at GTGs and talked to him for a long time and he is super nice puffing on his cigar... Its hard for me with grammar and spelling rules cause I've got a learning disability and try hard not to make mistakes and but he rails on like he's my 1st grade teacher.... :(

+100. It is not even that difficult to check. Good boost gauge will show him the "improvements". If he will find incrase from 20 to 0hg I will buy him a beer. Increase in boost-yes, in vac.. nope

i've seen some wastegates where the spring is so weak/worn that it doesnt even close completely with the car off! maybe his wastegate actuator is REALLY worn out?

he does know most of his stuff, but tactless is prolly a mild way of putting his way of interacting with people on the forums.

just browse some posts on Volvo XC Forums and you can see some poor folks trying to get input on stuff and getting flamed by him.

we all ask dumb questions :) .

sometimes a dumb answer is needed but not all the time.

just my 1 cent.
