Non-contacting Etm

Question: If the problem is with the wear of the resistor films in the end caps, then why doesn't someone just offer replacement end caps with new films and wipers? I understand the contact-less ETM is the better solution in that it eliminates the design issue altogether, but if someone were to offer replacement caps/films for say $100 that will last 80k miles or more (and shouldn't require any reprogramming), then I would be all for that. I'd consider it just another maintenance item to be done around t-belt changing time.

I haven't taken one apart, so maybe it's not that simple, but seems logical.

the end caps is where the resistance film is. that needs to be broken off. the center cover is glued on with alot of ahesive. big micro surgery that many people can't handle.

sure it can be a maintence item. if we knew when it would break and that a end user could service it. problem is it can shows signs of failing but not be totaly failed at 20k or 200k.

I've seen that image, from there it seems like the whole end caps could be removed intact and replaced, but I take it from what you are saying is that the connection would have to be broken and resoldered to the circuit board which most people wouldn't want to mess with. I still think it could be another potential option if the parts could be sourced. This coming from a guy who did his own ABS "rebuild" because he's too cheap to send to Victor. :)

Thus the warning seal on the XeMODeX ETM!

are you referring to me being cheap? :o i do not remember telling anyone that i did that! :D i did the abs in 40 minutes. that was the cheapest repair i ever did on this car. i could not believe that on the abs module all i needed to do was resolder the bad joints and it was all golden!

I bought a ETM from fleabay for $25. took that sucker apart and concluded that the ETM cleaning is a bullshit thing volvo does just to buy time. the whole etm is relied on a thin little piece of film. it is crazy how small the feelers and film are. the unit is not easy to get apart and there are no instructions anywhere either.

Good luck on this one Dan A, the abs was cake compared to how this thing comes apart.

feel more than free to utilize my toilet paper analogy anytime in regards to the ETM wipers... really!

consider it my gift to you... happy Valentines Day Steve!

I think this is a great idea, a little expensive, but i've got about 185k on my original ETM. So its just a matter of time before it goes. A little googling resulted in this - http://www.sacer.com.cn/ArticleShow.asp?ArticleID=100

Wonder if this could be a DIY job??

Mmmm so how is it that this exsists with no documentation or explaination?

It just listed as contactless sensor...

Nice find!

Edit: Wait a sec. What you *may* have run across is the manufacturer who is supplying the part to Xemodex. If that is the case then it wouldn't be too cool to try to undercut them if they were the ones that went through all the trouble and work to get it to production. What would be cool (again, if it is the same company) would be to convince Xemodex to just sell the part to some of the more determined DIYers. Just my opinion.

I'm suprised no one has any more comments on this.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done
