Guest 99 s70
Hi, My wife drives a 1999 v70 N/A with 90,000 miles that stalls occasionally for no apparent reason (according to her). No local shops have been able to find the cause...and it's happened on one other volvo she's driven. Can someone just list the likely (volvo) causes for this problem? She does have a tendency to let the gas go to empty before refilling. Thanks! Guest Guest_Chris_*
Probably an intermittent fault in the air mass meter. Sometimes it happens so fast the computer can't catch it and it won't throw the check engine light. Impossible to know for sure so you have to just put one in and see what happens. jo346820
no CELS or codes I know of...Has been happening for long time...Wife is car illiterate...but from her descriptions, it happens even while at speed...not just coming to a stop or taking off or idling...it seems to happen at random times.I thought, clogged fuel filter due to long time of letting the fuel get to E before refueling.Or...clogged flame trap...or does the 99 v70 not have one?And then, of course, tune-up (: Thanks

I suggest you drive the car for a while... Trying to diagnose problems through second hand (even tho it is yer wife) info is always hard.
ToxicLemonade
my mom's s80 had that same problem, left her stranded in the left lane on I-285 during rush our in Atlanta, very dangerous. her problem was a dirty throttle body. so try cleaning it out. hope that helps some. Kashif
I had the same problem on my 240 a while back and the cause was a faulty fuel pump relay, you could try checking that. She does have a tendency to let the gas go to empty before refilling.Try not letting the gas go to empty because gas is actually a lubricant for the fuel pump. This could lead to fuel pump failure and stalling randomly sounds like a fuel related problem. Recently my 850 died 50 miles from home all of sudden and the cause was a bad fuel pump, and I too was letting the gas near empty too many times. You could check the pressure of your fuel system using a fuel pressure guage.
Bay13
Someone mentioned it already, the throttle body on the NAs don't fail as often as the turbos, but they do get dirty, and typically what happens is when slowing down and coming to a stop the rpm will surge and or dip and kill the car, it usually starts right back up. Cleaning the TB on the NA 1999 is easy, just take the hose off the air box and the input to the TB and move it as best you can, and then move the flapper and clean it with a rag soaked with a carb cleaner.
