Blown Speaker- Part 2

Hey Guys!

im sure a bunch of you read my thread about my blown speaker and how I wasnt really looking to upgrade... Well, I decided to upgrade :P

So in my area, there was a special "liquidation sale" going on at a nearby auditorium, and they had a car audio section so I decided to play around and see what they got.

I talked to the guy there, and got his opinions on the best speakers for my car, looked around at all the different brands, and even was surfing Volvospeed on my iPhone to see what everyone else had and/or recommended, as well as a few google searches.

After searching a while, I settled on a pair of Infinity 5022i speakers to replace the front door speakers (the one that blew). They got great ratings online and it seemed to be a popular brand here.

Well I just got back from putting them in my car and WOW, I am so glad to finally have upgraded. But now I have a couple questions

- I was only able to screw in two screws on the speakers due to the different design, is that ok or is there an adapter I need to get?

- What should I upgrade next? I was thinking of getting an 850R amp first, then start on the other speakers as well. Or should I spring for an SC-901 w/amp? (I want to keep a stock look... im not a fan of those aftermarket headunits)

I, as well as a few others around here, have been hanging on to our stock 850 R amps and wiring harnesses, so they aren't hard to come by.

But the truth is it won't be enough power, you'll be much better off with an aftermarket amp. There is a write-up here in the forum somewhere on how to get line level signal out of your stock headunit, for using aftermarket amps. Do some a little more research, and just like upgrading speakers, you'll be glad you bought a real amp.

aftermarket amp more then likely the volvo amp is not powerfull enough

worse thing you can do is underpower speakers

What's the deal with people believing that "underpowering" a speaker is bad in any way?

Please explain to me why you think it's bad for the speaker in any way.

It's horrible in regards to sound quality, and when you have an amp straining to pump out signal, it has a much higher chance of sending a nasty spike and damaging your speakers.

Underpowering a speaker is bad. It's not a believe or not thing, it's math and engineering.

Yeah. Look it up. If you try to underpower a subwoofer, the signal will actually fry out the voice-coil almost as fast as overpowering.

Lets keep this simple and not get too technical:

Speakers are motors that operate on AC (alternating current) measured in watts. The higher the volume level requires more power to operate the speaker. When you start to get audible distortion it is highly likely that you have reached the maximum amount of power that a radio/amplifier can produce which results in clipping. Clipping in a nutshell describes when you have hit the ceiling of your power limits. This results in the AC that normally is being sent to the speaker being converted to DC which results in equipment failure. This is OVERLY simplified but at least you get the idea on why underpowering a speaker can be bad.

Always remember, you can turn the volume down as much as you want, but you can never turn it up higher than what it can actually do. Higher power in reserve will result in better audio performance plus insure equipment longevity.

Oh, ok, it was just a misunderstanding of wordage I guess.

To me, underpowering means sending, say, a 3w RMS signal to a speaker that can handle 50w RMS.

To you, underpowering means sending a clipped signal to a speaker.

Yes, sending clipped signals is bad all around, for amp and speaker. But sending a clean signal at low levels will not hurt a speaker in any way. That's what I was getting at.
